MONTREAL The Parti Quebecois has finally unveiled the details of its controversial Charter of Quebec Values, with a ban on religious symbols drawing the most criticism.
At a press conference held at the National Assembly in Quebec City, the Minister responsible for Democratic Institutions and Active Citizenship, Bernard Drainville, explained how the PQ proposes to address religious accommodation and Quebec values, in particular equality between men and women and religious neutrality in government.
It has been almost a year since the premier gave me the mandate to present Quebecers with solutions on religious accommodation and the religious neutrality of the state, Drainville noted.
These offer harmonious relations and social cohesion for a Quebec that is increasingly multiethnic and multireligious, he added.

(146,218 posts)It's ok to be christian, if you are not too ostentatious about it. It's not ok to be Muslim or Jewish.
This is sickening, imo. I hope it is challenged quickly in court.
Shame on the Parti Quebecois.

Someone wrote here recently that one of the best surgeons in Montreal will be leaving if this goes through. He's a Sikh and will not remove his turban.
It's a ridiculous rule.

(1,437 posts)On one hand it looks like they are discriminating against certain religions, on the other hand it looks equal. The people with turbans could just wear a turban-shaped earring instead, or dangle a gold one off a gold chain. heheh
The thing is that people don't understand or give a fuck when it doesn't personally effect them. I don't give a shit what 'public employees' wear. Cops, doctors, EMTs, bus drivers, janitors. They don't even need a uniform as long as they are doing their job. Hat, scarf, turban.. who cares.. idiocy.
