Catholics sign up, will show up, for same-sex marriage

The names of more than 1,000 Catholics will appear Sunday in a full-page newspaper ad endorsing Referendum 74 and same-sex marriage, which is passionately opposed by the churchs four bishops in Washington state.
A group of Jesuit-educated laypersons, the Young Adult Leadership Cohort, will carry the pro-Referendum 74 campaign a step farther by holding a pro-marriage equality demonstration at 4 p.m. Sunday on Marion Street at the north side of Seattles St. James Cathedral.
The developments Sunday are the latest in what has been a 10-month push back by Catholic laity, particularly in Seattle, against bishops opposition to and use of church resources to campaign against same-sex marriage.
In Washington and elsewhere:
Two Catholic governors, Chris Gregoire in Washington and Martin OMalley in Maryland, pushed their legislatures to approve marriage equality legislation. State Sen. Ed Murray, D-Seattle, a practicing Catholic, was chief sponsor in the Washington State Senate.
