Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory school said senior Jessica Urbina violated Archdiocese of San Francisco policy when she elected to wear a boy's tuxedo instead of the instead of the black off-the-shoulder drape offered to girls, according to Fox News:
Principal Gary Cannon told reporters that the controversy was a good learning opportunity for students but stressed that Sacred Heart is run in accordance with Roman Catholic Church teachings. "Straight, gay, bi, transgender, they are all welcome in Sacred Heart Cathedral and at the same time we're going to be clear in terms of being a Catholic institution and what the Catholic Church teaches on how do we live out that faith in a meaningful way," Cannon said.
On Friday, students at the school wore ties as a to protest the school's decision to remove Urbina's photo. They also started a Twitter campaign using the hashtag #JessicasTux
Urbina, 18, and her girlfriend also wore ties to school on Friday, according to SFGate.com:
"I'm appreciative of everything, like really I'm so frickin' glad that my fellow classmates are rallying behind me. I've ever felt more love than I do right now," Urbina said. "I've seen people with all the ties. Honestly, I've cried multiple times, overwhelmed with all this support, so I just want to thank everybody who's supporting me right now."
