Clinton’s Catholic VP pick faces scrutiny over his voting record

The Democrats' vice-presidential candidate is a practicing Catholic whose politics have been deeply shaped by his faith. But he has drawn flak over his attempt to draw a distinction between his personal convictions and his public voting record on abortion and the death penalty.

WASHINGTON - Since Hillary Clinton chose U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia as her vice presidential running mate, the practicing Catholic has faced scrutiny - and some criticism from bishops - over his mixed voting record.

Kaine grew up in Kansas outside Kansas City, Missouri, and attended the Jesuit-run Rockhurst High School there before taking time off from Harvard Law School to work in Honduras with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. He has been a member of St. Elizabeth Parish in Richmond, Virginia, for 30 years and an is an on and off choir member - he sang a solo verse of “Taste and See” at Mass there July 24.

But Catholics have called attention to his stances on issues such as abortion and the death penalty.

Bishop Thomas J. Tobin of Providence, Rhode Island, posted on Facebook July 23 that Kaine’s positions on abortion and same-sex marriage, among other issues, “are clearly contrary to well-established Catholic teachings; all of them have been opposed by Pope Francis as well.

The EWTN bloc of the Catholic Church will not accept a pro choice candidate as a "valid" Catholic.....I'm a Catholic and listen to Catholic radio through much of my day, and he will have a lot of negativity from the right side of the aisle.
