Time to Stop Anti-Semitic Incitement in American Mosques

Last Friday, the Egyptian-born American Imam Ammar Shahin took the pulpit at the Islamic Center of Davis, California, to deliver some words to the faithful.

“The prophet Muhammad,” the young Imam said in a calm voice, alternating between English and Arabic, “said ‘Judgment Day will not come until the Muslims fight the Jews, and the Jews hide behind stones and trees, and the stones and the trees say: Oh Muslim, oh servant of Allah…’ They will not say: Oh Egyptian, oh Palestinian, oh Jordanian, oh Syrian, of Afghan, oh Pakistani… The Prophet Muhammad says that the time will come, the last hour will not take place until the Muslims fight the Jews. We don’t say if it is in Palestine or another place. Until they fight.”

Shahin went on like this for a while longer. Then, he closed his eyes and addressed the Creator directly.

“Oh Allah,” he prayed, “support the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the rest of the Muslim lands. Oh Allah, liberate the Al-Aqsa Mosque from the filth of the Jews. Oh Allah, destroy those who close the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Oh Allah, show us the black day that you inflict upon them and the wonders of your ability. Oh Allah, count them one by one and annihilate them down to the very last one. Do not spare any one.”

Finding his groove, the Imam raised his voice in a plaintive cry: “Oh Allah, make this happen by our hand. Let us play a part in this.”

At more or less the same time, another Imam, Sheikh Mahmoud Harmoush, was preaching at another Islamic Center, in Riverside, 451 miles to the south. Born in Syria, Harmoush is an American citizen who had studied in West Virginia and California. And he had another tale of immigration to share with his flock: that of the Jews coming from Europe to Palestine.

The Muslims living in the Holy Land, the Imam said, were welcoming and wonderful, not knowing that the Jews had a plan to take over, “with killing and crimes and massacres.”

How low can these Jews sink? A fellow Muslim, the Imam said, his voice breaking, had sent him a video “showing a naked woman walking into the holy mosque under the occupation forces, just to insult more and more the psyche, honor, and dignity of the Muslims.”

The incident in question, of course, never happened. A naked woman did indeed appear, but at the Western Wall, not the mosque, and because no one present thought that female nudity posed a particular threat to the psyche, honor, and dignity of anyone, she was covered up and escorted out. Also, if you know anything at all about Al-Aqsa, you know that the incident in question could not have happened as described, because the mosque is governed not by the occupation forces but by the Muslim Waqf.

Apparently "isolated examples of Islamic antisemitism are not a focus of the SPLC, as focus on those items may contribute to anti-Muslim persecution."

I was pretty much told I was a racist for asking about why this is not listed.

They cover most all the politically-safe kinds of antisemitism (e.g, crazy churches, KKK, neo-Nazi, etc), but ignore: (1) Moslem antisemitism and (2) campus antisemitism.

Your other post made me interested to look there re: anti-gay efforts. They had the usual suspects of hate groups and some off-the-chart churches, but, you are correct, Moslems again get a pass here (as do mainline churches and synagogues, although I would put them in a different category -- they tend to not be in favor of execution of gays like many mainstream Moslem sources, but rather more "love the sinner, not the sin" approach in my non-gay* experience -- which perhaps is a distinction in action, rather than philosophy.)

* actually, at my age, I'm non-everything, but I do have ague recollection of liking pretty women. Not sure why, anymore.

I don't understand those "liberals" who condone the institutionalized antisemitism which is a principle belief of a religion.

I believe in being tolerant. I do not believe in being tolerant of intolerance. Why do we keep turning a blind eye to the pervasive, institutional antisemitism of Islam? Is it racist to call out racists for their racism?

One reason is listed in a comment above. The other reason is the difficulty in perusing such incidents. As demoralizing as it is, this has been a lifelong issue for me as a gay man. There are literally 100's of churches which preach homophobia, some which reach this level of incitement, and nothing is ever done. Most don't even complain, unless they are trying to make a point of some sort about religion. It is just another of example of religion getting a pass on its bigotry.

8. Imam apologizes for sermon attacking Jews for desecrating Al Aqsa

WASHINGTON (JTA) — A California imam who accused Jews of “desecrating” the mosque on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount and seemingly called for their annihilation has apologized.

“I said things that were hurtful to Jews. This was unacceptable,” Ammar Shahin of Davis, California, said at a press conference Friday, according to a statement by the Anti-Defamation League, which welcomed the apology. “I am deeply sorry for the pain I have caused. The last thing that I would do is intentionally hurt anyone, Muslim, Jewish or otherwise. It is not in my heart.”

A national Muslim umbrella group, the Muslim Public Affairs Council, had earlier denounced the sermon.

“We are disturbed deeply by the remarks of an imam from the Islamic Center of Davis during a sermon (khutba), which is meant to be a spiritual and uplifting speech before the congregational prayer every Friday. Instead, the sermon turned into a tirade against Jews by misquoting a saying (hadith) of the Prophet Muhammad,” said the statement posted Friday by MPAC.
