(7,658 posts)Thank you !! I placed at least a dozen allegedly "progressive' anti-Semites on permanent "ignore" on Democraticunderground.com for their defense of this garbage . Seems like there are elements of the left who apparently are jealous that the right wing gets to have all the bigots, and find themselves much relieved that they too can have one little corner of open bigotry available for them to join in the fun.
("Garbage " of course referring to Waters' statement )

(53,961 posts)Typical. Defending anti-Semitism is OK sometimes.
My favorite comment comes from a "writer/contributor at VDare." That's right, a writer for a white nationalist publication thinks some anti-Semitism is OK!

(7,658 posts)but were completely expected.I literally did put at least 10 more alleged progressives on ignore.I think my list is up to 50 with probably at least half if not more being for this reason.Of course it's not just here. Too much of the left has gleefully joined in. Hence my statement on some liberals seeming to be jealous of the right and what a relief it must be to have at least one group to be bigoted against too, and not letting the right wing have all the fun.

(53,961 posts)I find it interesting how many so-called liberals/progressives can peddle in centuries old stereotypes as if it ain't no big thing. Waters comments about the "Jewish Lobby", especially in the record business, sealed the deal on him. Of course, like most bigots (also in those comments on the link you provided) when they start regurgitating anti-Semitic (hell, any bigoted stereotypes), they never forget they "have Jewish friends" or are "related to a Jew," as if this magically means what they are saying isn't anti-Semitic.
It is also interesting how many 'don't care,' or blame Jews themselves for anti-Semitism.

(16,319 posts)which he stated that he recently read. Where else is he getting phrases like "right wing rabbinate"?
I imagine that Antisemites around the world are eating up the book.

(41,992 posts)The thought that spins through my mind when reading hate speech like this is a comment from a nurse friend of mine from Israel "we have the best burn centers in the world; we have too"

(53,961 posts)It is one thing for him just to be a hypocrite and bigoted toward Israel (he plays concerts in China, which occupies Tibet; and just played a concert in Turkey, which occupies parts of Cyprus), but the comments about the "Jewish Lobby" in the music industry and the implication they will murder him...fuck him! But, for some, anti-Semitism is a big "so what?" or nothing more than a "card being played." Gee, doesn't that whole "card being played" sound oh-so familiar? Hint: republican...race card. Using anti-Semitic canards to "criticize" Israel is anti-Semitism, just as it is racist to "criticize" Obama using age-old racist imagery.

(41,992 posts)Anti- semitism is one of the most insidious bigotries we have-- and I didn't deliberately start looking into it, I took a class or two, would read books or articles on racism or on white supremacists, or read posted responses about articles about the most innocuous movies--
and here it was. It's everywhere--why people choose to ignore this I don't know.
I will say meeting and talking with people from Israel personally opened my eyes.
Kind of OT-- but you know that Movie WW Z? Well in the book, (which is as awesome as the movie is not) Israel is the has has the sanest response, the best organized methods for survival-- in other words, looks good. In the movie-- Israel looks a mess.

(53,961 posts)I apologize for the time; I said I would answer, but the holidays were lazy days for me, mostly spent with my sweetie-honeys and four hyper chihuahuas (the weather was so bad they had to stay inside). Anywho....
Outside of sexism, anti-Semitism is one of the most pernicious and lasting hatreds that plagues the world. Some of the modern day hate is focused on Israel, but much of it is still directed squarely at us, as a people. It knows no educational limits, no social barriers, no ethic boundaries, it will infect anyone, even other Jews. I saw you noticed another thread about a new movement, the quenelle, a discreet way to do the Nazi salute. Of course, many scoff at the notion of the "new" anti-Semitism, which is almost always directed at Israel, thus the addition of the word "new." It isn't actually new or even inventive, it is simply the same anti-Semitism with the word "Jew" removed and the words "Zionist" (or another of its forms) or "Israel." Which leads me to your next question...
I didn't read "World War Z", but I did see the movie. My brother read it and said the book was infinitely better. Those that read the book, said the portrayal of Israel was "to excuse Israeli "Apartheid", Zionism, and to show that Jews were smarter than anyone else, but it can be expected because it was written by a Jew" (Mel Brooks' son). The movie version was excused as "showing it differently from the book is to make people sympathetic to the Jew." That was from the talkbacks at Yahoo! (as I remember it or a similar site), and I found similar comments at the National Vanguard and a source that has been used here (I just can't remember if it was the Veteran's website or VDare).
There are some really interesting anti-Semitic sites out there and can be educational to read, though it should be done on an empty stomach.

(41,992 posts)But I felt the book used Israel as having the sanest response to an insane situation, because that's what Israel lives with all the time
I felt it was perfectly appropriate, and the book wasn't "about" Israel anyway. It was about fucking Zombies.
I despise anti-semitism as I despise all negative "isms". I've read just enough, taken a couple of "ethnic America" and "ethnic world history classes, that I'll have to agree with you about the sexism and anti-semitism. You don't even have to turn over rocks to see it. It's part of out culture and a very, very ugly one indeed. Shining a light on it doesn't root it out, it just seems to dig in deeper.
