Protest Spike TV new show 'American Digger'

In the US, there are millions of historical relics buried in backyards just waiting to be discovered and turned into profit. “American Digger” hopes to claim a piece of that pie as the series travels to a different city each week, including Detroit, MI, Brooklyn, NY, Chicago, IL and Jamestown, VA searching for high-value artifacts and relics, some of which have been untouched for centuries.

After pinpointing historical locations such as Civil War and Revolutionary War battlefields, Savage’s first task is to convince reluctant homeowners to let his team dig up their property using state-of-the-art metal detectors and heavy-duty excavation equipment.

The team will then sell any artifacts found for a substantial profit by consulting experts and scouring the antique and collectible markets, but not before negotiating a deal to divide the revenue with the property owners.

Society for American Archaeology (SAA) responds

Dear Mr. Kay,
I write to you as the president of the Society for American Archaeology (SAA) to express concern about the new reality television series entitled, “American Digger,” which will premiere on Spike TV March 20. We ask in the strongest possible terms that you take steps to alter the message of the show, which is contrary to the ethics of American archaeological practice, highly destructive, and possibly illegal.

SAA is an international organization that, since its founding in 1934, has been dedicated to the research about and interpretation and protection of the archaeological heritage of the Americas. With nearly 7,000 members, SAA represents professional archaeologists in colleges and universities, museums, government agencies, and the private sector. SAA has members in all 50 states as well as many other nations around the world.

Archaeology is a scientific discipline involving the systematic examination and careful study of evidence relevant to human lives and lifestyles in the past. Members of SAA endeavor to stimulate interest in the past, advocate for the conservation of cultural resources, encourage public access to and appreciation of archaeology, and oppose all looting of sites and the purchase and sale of looted archaeological materials. In contrast to these standards of archaeological research and conduct, “American Digger” presents excavation as treasure hunting. The association of professional archaeology with “treasure hunting” impugns the discipline and the thousands of good scientists associated with it.

The archaeological record is precious. Once a site is dug, excavations completed, and artifacts removed, the site can never reveal the mysteries of the past again. Archaeologists are careful to preserve buried history so that future techniques and approaches can tease more information from the ground. Excavating in the way you suggest, without a plan, with little regard for science, preservation, or future approaches, is unethical and robs our descendants of knowledge.

do it properly.

most of these grave robbers destroy more things than then actually help with their bull in a china shop approach.

First, the types of things that metal detectors find are, well, metal. And metal objects when buried will reach a state of equilibrium with their environment. Exposing them to the air kickstarts the decay process again, especially with iron.

Second, the archaeologist's view is to leave it where it is unless there is a compelling reason to dig it up, and if you do have to do that, then you must do it in a way that preserves as much information about the site as possible. You only get one chance to excavate a site, because archaeology is one of the only sciences that results in the destruction of the primary source of information -the archaeological site, with all of its artifacts and soil layers. The relationship between artifacts and their positions in the site is vitally important to understanding the site.

These yahoos and their ilk not only destroy sites, they destroy the information contained within them by not doing it in a systematic manner and recording the results. We all lose when looters dig sites for their own financial gain.

16. The reality is that there will never be enough resources to scientifically excavate every site.

Should digging in a major civil war battlefield be restricted to archaeologists? Yes. However, many archaeologists hold the extremist view that metal detecting should be banned in all areas. The reality is that hobbyists have made many significant finds, many of which would have remained in the ground until the end of time if the archaeologists had their way.

17. Yes, that is the reality.

However, that is not an argument for wanton destruction of sites by looting.

Many archaeologists hold the view that all metal detecting should be banned everywhere? Massive strawman there. No archaeologist I know holds that view, and I'll wager I know a lot more archaeologists than you seem to.

Yes, hobbyists have made significant finds, but their significance comes from the archaeological examinations and follow-up excavations and analysis that made them significant. How many more "significant finds" have been lost because the context was destroyed or never reported? The answer is more than we'll ever know.

The archaeologist viewpoint is that it is better to preserve a site than destroy it.

You seem to have a real hostility towards archaeologists.

Chances are better than not they're not actually going to be digging up anything at all.

My bet is they'll scrape the topsoil off, liberally seed the ground with "artifacts" they can then dig up and pretend to auction off.

The only thing they're likely to dig up that they didn't put there in the first place is a septic tank or gas line.
