Boffins PROBE DEEP into URANUS' depths, beneath SPOTTY surface

By Iain Thomson,

Uranus is one of the darkest places in our Solar System - which makes spotting it from Earth hard. Astronomers have caught the gas giant lighting up as unexplained storms ripped away its atmospheric cover.

Something is rumbling deep within Uranus

Using the W. M. Keck II Telescope on Hawaii, astronomers first noted the planet's unusual appearance on August 5 and 6: a bright spot appeared that accounted for 30 per cent of the light usually reflected by the gas giant. They estimated that the images showed a massive storm disrupting the upper atmosphere of the planet.

"This type of activity would have been expected in 2007, when Uranus's once every 42-year equinox occurred and the Sun shined directly on the equator," noted co-investigator Heidi Hammel of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy.

"But we predicted that such activity would have died down by now. Why we see these incredible storms now is beyond anybody's guess."

Probe deep enough and you'll get giant gas. Eleanors38 Nov 2014 #1
They'd have to get past the "Flatusphere" damyank913 Nov 2014 #2
I used to have that problem too. postulater Nov 2014 #3
Don't mind explosions if they are artsy-fartsy. Eleanors38 Nov 2014 #9
It's actually easier to spot Uranus if you look for it's "moon" 1st. damyank913 Nov 2014 #8

It might go something like this: "Thanks to Obamacare, Uranus is experiencing explosive eruptions. He must be impeached and Obamacare repealed before Uranus completely blows apart. Please donate to the Republican party before Uranus is no more!"

My money is on Ted Cruz saying something like that, especially since he isn't a scientist. He might want to get on the Uranus exploding story to prove that he does belong as the head of the science subcommittee.

Of course Sarah Palin might say it (Does she even know that Uranus is a planet?), but then ask that the money be sent to her that she may produce a WebTV show about the evil Obama White House and their plans to destroy Uranus.
edit to add: It just dawned on me that Palin might not know what an anus is. I'm sure she knows what an a$$hole is, but just not its proper name.

(Eddie Mair on Radio 4's 'PM' to a British scientist involved in Philae, to be exact). That's a way with words.
