or at least stag horns and a long neck.

Those critters are cute, in a lizardy sort of way, but they don't resemble dragons in the least.

Still, it's always good to discover that we haven't found everything on this old planet.

it's been too long since I read Tolkien.

I suppose - technically (since we're already going with the presumption that dragons are real) that the little critter could be a cold-drake - no wings, no fire, and apparently no description beyond that from J.R., so that leaves the door open for imagining what we wish.

My personal feeling about it is that a dragon needs wings. And fire. It's damned difficult to wreck havoc on the countryside without at least one - preferably both!

My favorites, quite honestly, are those described by McCaffrey in the Pern series. Large bodied with long necks, sinuous tails, and more delicate than overly muscular limbs; graceful in movement; large wings - and fire breathing. I'm a geek. I admit it.
