NASA just found a spacecraft that’s been lost for two years

By Rachel Feltman August 23 at 8:46 AM

NASA is reporting that one of the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatories, known as the STEREO-B spacecraft, has made contact after two years of silence.

Along with its sister STEREO-A, the prodigal probe is tasked with observing the sun. When the two were launched back in 2006, the STEREO spacecraft entered an orbit around the sun respectively just ahead of and just behind the Earth, allowing them to observe solar phenomena such as coronal mass ejections from multiple angles.

When STEREO-B went quiet in October 2014, it was hardly considered a failure: Its mission was only supposed to last for two years. Like many NASA spacecraft, the STEREO probes have long exceeded their shelf life.

Radio silence from a spacecraft is never fun, but the mission team never had reason to think that the spacecraft was gone for good. STEREO-B went silent just after mission control tested its "command loss timer," a hard reset that would be automatically triggered if STEREO-B ever stopped communicating with Earth for 72 hours. During STEREO-B's primary mission, the spacecraft was never meant to go incommunicado. But because it lived so long, it drifted into a slightly different orbit, setting itself up to pass behind the sun. The mission team was just trying to be prepared for a period when the sun would get in their way.

NASA has found the lost STEREO-B spacecraft after two years

By Ryan Whitwam on August 24, 2016 at 7:30 am

If you’re going to lose something, space is just about the worst possible place. It’s literally the biggest thing there is, so what are your chances of finding it again? NASA has spent the last two years looking for the STEREO-B satellite, one half of the STEREO mission to monitor the sun. Over the weekend, the NASA team was able to make contact with the lost spacecraft, leading to hope that the mission could be back at full power in the not-too-distant future.

The STEREO satellites are more properly known as Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatories. They were launched into orbit around the sun in 2006 with the aim of providing full 360-degree observation of our friendly neighborhood star. The two satellites were maneuvered into orbits on the other side of the sun from Earth. With Earth-based observatories and the STEREO satellites together, astronomers could see the entire surface of the sun. The satellites reach optimal position in 2011 (exactly 180-degrees apart), allowing them to image the entire surface of the sun unaided.

The trouble with STEREO-B started in late 2014. NASA realized that due to the nature of the satellite’s orbit, it would undergo a “solar conjunction” with Earth. That meant the probe would be on the opposite side of the sun and out of contact with NASA for about three months. It was supposed to have failsafes in place that would reset the system after 72 hours with no contact. The STEREO team decided to test that functionality on both satellites. STEREO-A came back online as expected, but STEREO-B disappeared.

Last year, NASA speculated the system that tells the spacecraft how fast is is rotating failed, resulting in an inability to control its orientation or keep its solar panels pointed at the sun. However, NASA didn’t give up on little STEREO-B. Every month, the STEREO team dedicated three four-hour blocks of time on the Deep Space Network to scanning for signals from STEREO-B. Last weekend, they finally spotted it. NASA spent several hours tracking the position and status of the craft, then powered it down to save the batteries.
