Freaked out when you see clusters of bumps and holes? You could have trypophobia

Have you ever looked at an image of a cluster of small holes — such as those on a lotus seed head, or in a crumpet — and suddenly felt anxious, uncomfortable or even ill? Well, it turns out you are not alone.

If your skin is crawling and you have to immediately look away, you may have trypophobia — defined as an intense or irrational fear of a cluster of bumps or holes.

While it is a peculiar phobia, it is not entirely uncommon, with an expert estimating between 10 to 20 per cent of the population might experience it to some degree.

The word "trypophobia" is derived from the Greek word "trypo", meaning "punching, drilling or boring holes".
