It's refreshing to see a science/engineering video that's not a bunch of male priests wearing white robes anointed by some Pope of Science to mansplain very important stuff.

(38,322 posts)It first achieved criticality in 1958, was upgraded to produce a higher neutron flux in 1973, and generally runs 24/7.

(767 posts)Livermore Pool Type Reactor (LPTR) 3 MW power. I provided health physics safety support. In 1977 started a national program, National Uranium Research & Evaluation (NURE) to find elements in water & dirt samples. There were several "rabbit" systems. Normally the reactor brought up at 8 AM and secured at 4 PM. special experiments required 24 a day operation. All operators tested and certified be allowed to operate reactor. Explosives are not promised near reactors, but a special procedure was written to use neutrons to "X-ray" NASA explosive bolts. Many biological samples irradiated to check for toxic chemicals in animal organs........
