MEXICO CITY — Mexican doctors say they have performed the first double arm transplant in Latin America.

Surgical team chief Dr. Martin Iglesias says a 52-year-old man who lost his two arms just below the elbow received the arms of a 34-year-old shooting victim.

Gabriel Granados, a father of two who lost both arms after suffering severe electrical burns, told a news conference that the transplant was "wonderful." The Mexico City municipal employee added that he has begun to feel his new hands.

Iglesias said there are other 23 patients waiting for arms transplant although only six could be successfully done.
