That was a later Spencerian concoction, and it was never accurate, just a (rather ridiculous) oversimplification. Many "unfit" species survive and reproduce; it's only over many generations that actual evolution occurs.

Is IS disturbing to think that the imbeciles are the fittest, let alone surviving! - - -
I think about the cartoon with the progression of primates from chimp to human, and the human is The Felon (tRump). The ape behind him is turned around facing the others, and says, "Go back---we f*cked up." Side-splitting!
