Of course I would never hold back giving because of this, but it is just moderately annoying to me that when I get "thank you" emails from recipients from an organization to which I am a monthly donor (ModestNeeds.org), they so often thank GOD and credit their good fortune to an answered prayer.
I am not god. I am not an angel. I did not hear your prayer. I gave because I care about people and want to help those who struggle. I do this out of the goodness of my heart, not because some entity demands 10% from me or because I need to buy my way into heaven.
If you need to thank anyone, thank those like me who donated out of love for humanity, rather than crediting a supernatural force.
Amen.

(78 posts)So obviously you're not responsible for your own actions.
Do whatever you want. If you want to stop giving money, go ahead and stop. Will they be hurting because you didn't donate? Probably not, but there'll always be pushback saying, "Why are YOU hurting people by stopping donating?"
Because, you know, you are just an illegitimate vessel of which "god's light pours through" devoiding you of any actual credence.

I can overlook the religious posturing of a charity provided that they treat the recipients equally.

(14,487 posts)Or when some people died and some survived, "god" saved the survivors. Yeah, right, so were those who died less worthy, or did their families just not pray hard enough?
This charity does NOT involve religion at all. It's purely the response of the recipients that involves religion.

Hello! If you left it up to god, you'd still be infertile. Thank whomever made the fertility drugs and the dr's and nurses who kept your octuplets alive...'cause we aren't made for octuplets....

(18,219 posts)In fact, your second paragraph is an excellent note to send them. I also still give to charities that I really believe do good for the most people, but I also want to throw up a little whenever I get those kinds of thank you's. I think that maybe we all should be more vocal about these comments from organizations when we give.
