He plays Judas. Currently playing in Australia, but I hope a world tour is planned. I'd really like to see this thing:
Tim Minchin crowned superstar of Jesus Christ Superstar Arena Spectacular
Having been brought into the 21st century with an edgy new plot inspired by the London riots, Jesus Christ Superstar Arena Spectacular is more raw, urban, dark and gritty than previous reincarnations.
And with an eclectic cast of Tim Minchin as Judas Iscariot, former Spice Girl Melanie Chisholm as Mary Magdalene and former Noiseworks frontman Jon Stevens as Pontius Pilate, it blows away tradition.
Theres firebombing and looting and live news broadcasting in the opening seconds and seemingly dozens of dancers (of all shapes and sizes) in combat pants who create a Stomp-meets-Rent feel.

I always liked Minchin's song "Thank You God," about a friend named Sam whose mother's cataracts "miraculously" healed:
Fuck me Sam, what are the odds
That of history's endless parade of gods
That the God you just happened to be taught to believe in
Is the actual one and he digs on healing,
But not the AIDS-ridden African nations
Nor the victims of the plague, nor the flood-addled Asians,
But healthy, privately-insured Australians
With common and curable corneal degeneration...
So for a bit of a change from his usual stunt
Of being a sexist, racist, murderous cunt
He popped down to Dandenong and just like that
Used his powers to heal the cataracts of Sam's mum

(49,991 posts)I doubt I would ever get a chance to see it live, but I'll take video as a backup option.
Curmudgeoness
(18,219 posts)even if it was religious. I remember when it came out, the "real" Christians were appalled....that was all I needed to want to see it. I saw it once in Houston, and was glad that I did. I grew up with those songs.
I would really like to see a modernized and raw rendition of it. Let's hope that they do tour all over the place....I want to see this.
