One night a man had a dream.

He dreamed he was walking along the beach with a presence near him that he couldn't quite recognize. As he looked back, sometimes he saw two sets of footprints and sometimes one. He realized the presence must have been God who had lovingly carried him across the rugged parts of the beach.

And then God appeared in the dream and said, amidst a deafening clap of thunder, "You fool! I was never there. The presence was of your fellow humans, the ones you shunned because they were different than you, the ones who were tormented while you turned away, the ones who suffered while you sat there smug in your self righteousness!"

"But I don't understand.", said the man. "Why were there two sets of footprints sometimes, and sometimes only one?"

"Because", said God. "Those were the times that your fellow humans carried you. They forgave you and helped you through those hard passages. By looking to the sky for imaginary miracles, you failed to see the greatest miracle of all: human beings treating other human beings with decency and compassion, even the most undeserving ones!"

than those who don't. What comes to mind is when a fellow human helps them, and they give praise to god for saving them. It never ceases to amaze me.
