This one not as much.

Some people will obviously be offended by ANYTHING that disagrees with them. These type of close minded people should be ignored. In the words of Thomas Paine:

[div class="excerpt" style="margin-left:1em; border:1px solid #bfbfbf; border-radius:0.4615em; box-shadow:3px 3px 3px #999999;"]To argue with a man who has renounced the use and authority of reason, and whose philosophy consists in holding humanity in contempt, is like administering medicine to the dead, or endeavoring to convert an atheist by scripture.

But there are people who go out of their way to be rude and disrespectful and instigate fights for the sake of causing trouble. This quote could very well be used to defend that behavior. To defend people who use homophobic slur or who harass others.

More over, I find those who decry civility and defend being politically incorrect are the first ones to get "offended" when they are not treated politically correct.

We should remain civil because it makes others more inclined to listen and understand us. Because it makes engaging with others more pleasant. And if for no other reason, because we are BETTER than those who act in that manner.

Im not saying that we should care what the people who take offense when none is given think, but rather we should strive to be respectful in how we deal with others.
