Atheists & Agnostics
Related: About this forumA big round of applause to our **awesome** hosts, who....
collectively and individually do their absolute best to keep our safe haven exactly that: a safe haven. They listen to our concerns, they engage in dialogue with members prior to blocking them from the group or locking their threads. They keep the well-being of the group (as in forum) and the group (as in the people) at the fore-front of their mind and do everything they can to make this a safe, welcome, and inviting place for everyone who has an interest in our issues (and with following the quite simple SOP).
They have put up with unbelievable bullshit and nastiness in the Host forum recently, and I commend them for not giving back the absolutely ridiculous, disrespectful snark that they got. Not just about things that happen recently, but frequently. Apparently, it is okay for other groups to ban members, but not us. It is okay for other groups to enforce their SOP, but not us.
They routinely stand up for "us," as in a forum/group and as a collective of Atheists/Agnostics/And other non-believers when our group, or SOP, or the hosting duties that we agreed to are mocked, belittled, and scrutinized.
This has been a tough week for us, and an even tougher week for them. Yet there they went, with poise and composure, handling these difficult matters with dignity and almost (almost) without breaking a sweat.
Thank you, Goblinmonger, EvolveOrConvolve, and JNelson6563 for all you do for us, and for the community.

(87 posts)I skimmed through the last two days of posts and threads in here and R forums which concerned so many.
I think these hosts are doing an excellent job, fair, rational, reasoned and prompt.
Were we to meet them in person, we'd buy them a meal of whatever they want, with whatever beverages they select.
I don't know much history here, but if the last few days of posts here and in that other forum are any indication, oh boy.
I guess the hosts of this forum have their work cut out for them, given all the posting and protesting and baiting and efforts at public shaming of this atheists' safe haven forum have been going on.
I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but do any of you think all of this started around the time of the successful efforts to hide a silly cartoon about the RCC?
No need to answer my question unless you want to. I will just read and learn as I go along here.
And thanks to almost all of the posters I've read here. You have given me some smiles, and more than a little opportunity to learn more about both religion, religious bigotry, and atheism.
Edited to correct some grammar and one misstatement.

(9,356 posts)This needs to be up top for a while.
I remember campaigning early for JNelson6563 to take the Host job. The poor woman has probably never forgiven me.
But all of our hosts are awesome. And in honor of a certain thread in a Certain Other Group today...some of you grumps know what I'm talking about...I'd like to say to all three of them:

Seriously, I am proud to be hosting with these guys. They are brilliant and fabulous, like so many of you here in this splendid group.

(9,288 posts)The fact that you had to put up with any nastiness in the host forum is shameful.
Thanks for all your hard work!

(436 posts)Tough job. You want it to remain a safe haven, but at the same time, have restraint using the ban hammer. I support the decisions you've had to make.

(13,485 posts)pass the offering plate and take up a love offering for our most gracious and reasonable hosts. Proceeds to be given out equally to each with a fine helping of Strawberry Ice Milk bathed in Scotch.
Seriously, from what we have just read, you three represent all of us here honorably. I hope we ( I ) are (am) able to represent you with the same professionalism and poise. I doubt it.

(12,153 posts)we have three fine, gracious hosts who are on the ball, keeping A&A from becoming a no-holds-barred free-for-all. You all are doing a super job!
Disruptors sneak in now and then, but if they dont shape up, they don't stay long.
Thanks, Goblinmonger, EvolveOrConvolve, and JNelson6563!

(3,747 posts)I'm new to this group and DU. I've only posted a few times here, but have been lurking and listening and learning. I've learned a number of thing from the people on this board, and have a lot of respect for you.
That said, I've seen some of the best moderation I've ever seen these last few months. Thank you so much for your transparency, your honesty, and your continued effort despite the crap thrown your way day in and out. This is a group I've been able to respect and really learn from. Thank you, moderators, for keeping it that way.

(5,351 posts)I wouldn't want to have to do what Goblinmonger, EvolveOrConvolve, and JNelson6563 have to do, but even if I were of such a mind I can't think of three better hosts to have than them.
to our most excellent hosts.

(49,533 posts)we will continue to endure these attacks. Unable to defend their ideas in an open dialog, they resort to this kind of behavior.
In a way, I feel sorry for them. Well, more like pity.
But I love our hosts!!

(5,351 posts)If he hadn't posted the things he posted while he was still allowed in here, he'd still be allowed in here. He should be more mindful of the fact that he got a hell of a lot more leeway here than if he would have if he'd gone into any other safe haven and started attacking its members and later grave dancing when a well-liked, long-term member got PPRed. He had plenty of warnings and chose to ignore them--the fact that he got blocked is his own fault, imo, especially after being told, in so many words, "Please clean up your act or you're gone."

Hey, please don't say stuff like that.

Alright if you can't behave yourself you're going to be blocked.

SUBJECT: Dear Shit-head...
But I should point out - that's not aimed at any specific shit-head, just shit-heads in general.
Note to lurking spies, tattle-tales, etc. - there's your big bowl of Alert Chow for the day. Eat it up!

(654 posts)I agree, thankless job for certain and pretty well done from my rather limited experience. I've spent some time watching, posted a little and it's not really hard to figure this out.
Don't be a jackass, and especially don't be a jackass after you've been asked very nicely to try being polite again.
I enjoy reading your words here, from all of you. Your words indicate that all of you are much nicer than I am, and have a great deal more heart than I do. Without wishing to sound all smarmy it would appear to me that many of you possess a politer attitude than the religious folks in other forums here. I suspect there is a lesson there as well, and I will review that lesson and attempt to learn from it.
Anyway, thank you for creating a great space here and I will be continuing to post at random intervals when I think my words might add a little to the conversation. Thank you for making me feel welcome, it's much appreciated!!

(6,452 posts)Seriously though, the hosts always, ALWAYS try to do things a certain way. One, we always try to get consensus before making any decision, and if we can't get consensus (ie, one of the hosts is MIA for awhile), we always revisit the subject eventually. Two, no matter what happens, we try to do what's best for the members of this group rather than what's best for DU or other groups/forums at DU (although that's something that's considered as well).
Our group is filled with truly good people, and it would suck to lose anyone to the DU tombstone.
