Exhibit A:
On this day long ago, a child was born who, by age 30, would transform the world, the Cosmos host tweeted Thursday. Happy Birthday Isaac Newton b. Dec 25, 1642.
Exhibit B:
Merry Christmas to all. A Pagan holiday (BC) becomes a Religious holiday (AD). Which then becomes a Shopping holiday (USA).
Exhibit C:
"QUESTION: ThIs year, what do all the world's Muslims and Jews call December 25th? ANSWER: Thursday"

(111,261 posts)in an absolute frenzy of wanting to claim persecution so they can go to heaven or just go around in a constant snit because not everybody agrees with them that the universe is only 6000 years old.
My advice to them (although few read DU) would be to chill at home and in church because nobody expects them to have to cope with science in those two places, and leave the scientists alone because going around in a perpetual hissy fit is bad for most of their body systems.

(1,805 posts)but love it when the good man is on his show - or Jon Stewart's - or anyone's. Can't imagine him ever being on Fox, but stranger things have happened.

(22,666 posts)...would piss off a lot of Christians.
It's about Stephen Hawkings' life and discoveries - worth a watch if anyone is curious.

(18,219 posts)I suppose that the conservative Christians who are so upset about these facts are just looking for reasons to be pissed off. Like the pretend War of Christmas....getting in a huff over someone wishing them Happy Holidays or Season's Greetings. So they have a fit, screaming "It's Merry Christmas, asshole!" Just like Jesus would do.

(9,288 posts) Saw some comments on my facebook ...and other places... about this and just wanted to vent a bit.
NDT was not disrespectful or insulting in any way. He was just making a joke by defying expectations. The expectation was for him to be taking about Yeshua Ben Yosef, when in fact he was talking about Isaac Newton. That is not disrespecting, or bashing, or an insult to Yeshua or Christians in anyway. So what is it that people are getting upset about?
I think it is that they believe Christians OWN December 25. Guess what? They don't. NDT offense was that he dared give attention to someone other than Yeshua. Non-Christians are in no way what-so-ever obligated to revere or treat December 25 or Yeshua as sacred. We have the right to celebrate things other than their religion.
The people who are offended by this are wanting to be offended. They are mad that we are not obsequiously treating their beliefs as sacrosanct. They think they have the privilege of that day belonging to them. That is what I think this is really about, and I have no intention of giving them that satisfaction.
It was a non-offensive joke and people need to accept that we can talk about things other than Jesus whenever we want. That is our right.
PS:
Almost every thread on this subject I have seen some pedantic person who loves to point out that Isaac Newton was not actually born on Dec. 25 by the current calendar. Well to them I would like to point out...neither was Jesus!
Depending on what part of the bible you read (shocker....they contradict each other) he was either born sometime in March (when they would keep the sheep outside) or sometime around the feast of Tabernacles (based upon when John the baptist was conceived and the fact that Mary conceived Yeshua 6 months later).
Just another coincidence binding Jesus to Newton.
