Atheists & Agnostics
Related: About this forumAny suggestions for other internet forums for non-believers?
I'm at the point where DU no longer feels welcoming. It's lost that "home" feeling, and doesn't seem to have the same sense of community that it once had. I'm not going to leave DU - I think the political battle is too important not to continue. I'll stick around and continue my hosting duties, but I think I'm going to do lurk more and post less.
Does anyone have any suggestions for other atheists forums on the internet that are worthwhile places to hang out? Some place, preferably, that doesn't have a lot of Ayn Rand types and has more of a Progressive agenda. Maybe a place where former DUers hang out?

(19,705 posts)Feeling the same way. Don't like reddit at all. Atheist Nexus seems ok, not big on the format. Would love to find a new home though.

(6,452 posts)I checked out Atheist Nexus, and I agree with you - the format is terrible. Reddit, to me, is just awful. I hate everything about the site's layout, format, etc. Plus, it moves too fast sometimes to have a thoughtful conversation.

(111,358 posts)Yeah, knitting. We're everywhere. Atheists, that is. That particular group is all normal as apple pie men and women who play with yarn and don't believe a word of any religious crap
I agree that DU's lost a lot a community feeling now that it's gotten so big, it's part of the price of success. I'd rather lose the community because such communities can become insular after a while. Seeing it successful is better, even if it means butting heads with some, well, buttheads once in a while.
I've found other atheist sites and given up on them after a while because they have gotten insular, inside jokes and buzzwords taking over meaningful chatter.
And yes, there are always Randorrhoids on other atheist sites. I don't see any among the knitters, though, not yet.

(6,452 posts)I hadn't thought of finding a forum relating to something else I enjoy then looking for atheists there. I guess that's what DU is.
Thanks!
If so, I hang out in the Atheists forum there (even have started a couple threads) and have been visiting a lot more often lately. If not, could you please PM me with the site. The more knitting atheists the better.

(34,582 posts)DU changed due to Rush's Operation Chaos during the 2008 primaries. Look at the join date of a lot of the most vocal people who claim to be dems but espouse right wing ideology- most are 2008 and after. And they are very vocal and prolific. And now with the jury system, they get to silence people, without the responsibility that being a mod brings.

Several atheist and free thought blogs updated on a regular basis.

(6,452 posts)Mostly I read Pharyngula, but I browse through the other blogs from time to time. It makes very good reading, but doesn't seem like a real community. I look at FTB as more of an online magazine than discussion forum or message board.

(6,452 posts)I'm still looking for a good place. None of the suggestions feels "right", if that makes any sense.
I already do the Facebook thing, but I'm friends with hundreds of people, including family members and co-workers. Were my employer to find out that I'm an atheist, my job wouldn't be around for long.

(1,951 posts)I have no suggestions, but I'd like to know, too. This place is starting to get surreal. People arguing against gay marriage in the feminism group...atheists "devil's advocating" the anti-choice position in the religion group...wtf???
