I've heard the Dali Lama...

...claim he doesn't use a phone or a computer.
This was in the context of being 'unattached'.

You can damn well bet the staff he relies on does. His claim rang hollow to me bordering on charlatan.

Just sayin'.

What I know about the Dalai Lama- admittedly not a ton- is he probably could laugh at himself about it, too.

He did have one quote about "God"- something to the effect of "God", or the concept thereof, is a small mystery. The great mystery is the self.

I would agree with that sentiment, and I'm about as much of an Atheist as there is.

...we've got these things called egos.
It's just when so-called "leaders" act like they are somehow past theirs I get a bit dismayed. Mostly for their followers who buy it.

..."there will be no following".

"You kick people in their feelings and help them with their being."

"Be good and then feel good...in that order."

Among other profundities.

Well, the lightning comes first, and the thunder is just a sound. How is it supposed to "get" you?

But I take it to mean that there are certain basic, obvious inevitabilities to existence that we can't do anything about.

I think Robert Hunter is one of the greatest poet/lyricists of the past century, but hey- your mileage may vary. Like licorice, as they say.

And yes, I understand what thunder and lightning are.

who successfully fought all the gods and demons of his day by realizing they were creations of his own mind.

There's a lot of folk religion around some sects of Buddhism. Those are largely incompatible with atheism.

to show he actually once made this claim? Seems made up to me, especially since he admits to noticing having attachments (to things like his wrist watch) and never claims to be a superior person. Anyway, Buddhist philosophy doesn't have anything against using computer technology. It's like a pen, just more sophisticated. Using technology doesn't mean you have "attachment" necessarily.

He's a good guy.
I just can't abide with the whole "following" concept I guess.
