Despite being an outspoken Christian, Tim Tebow has now failed at two sports.

http://mlb.nbcsports.com/2018/03/14/tim-tebow-reassigned-to-minor-league-camp/

Tebow’s demotion came after he went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts in an exhibition against the Astros yesterday. Overall he’s 1-for-18 with 11 strikeouts in spring training.

Oh well, god must have another plan! Strange that the original plan involved dicking around with him for so long.

By all accounts, he does good things for people, and I have never heard of him doing something harmful. He believes in god, so what? As someone who thinks religion is just another story but is still involved in the religious community, I can tell you that juvenile comments mocking him about his religion just make the commenter look like an ass. But, have your fun, I guess, if it makes you feel better about yourself.

The point is Tim Tebow is an asshat. Whether his asshattery is intentional or accidental is immaterial to his deserving criticism, scorn, and/or mockery.

Here's why I think it's relevant:

Tebow has been quite vocal about how wonderful his god is. He's been quite public with his displays of faith. Tebow is the kind of Christian who praises his god when things go well, but never says anything when things go wrong.

If you're going to give your god credit for the good things, but not the bad things, you're inconsistent at best, a hypocrite at worst. I think that kind of stuff needs to be called out. You don't. So what?

To top it all off, we're on an anonymous message board on the Internet. Good luck shaming all the people who say things you think are inappropriate.

And I don't get the whole shaming statement. I was not shaming anyone. At least I was not trying to.

I do think peoples' obsession with him lacks logic. It probably speaks more to the failings of the people criticizing him than to Tebow himself.

This is a good point. I guess I just don't view Tebow as a hypocrite, more like an ignorant True Believer. He does not appear to be saying this stuff to purposefully con anyone, unlike most of the high-profile fundies.

You made it personal, despite acting as if you were above that. I called bullshit, and I still do.

Tebow chooses to makes his faith public, and the price of that is to invite public criticism. Because the "high-profile fundies" have held him up as an example for the rest of us (and to my knowledge he hasn't repudiated them), he's fair game.

So what are my failings, hueymahl? List them out. Let's do this.

Tebow has made and continues to make a public spectacle of his religion, thereby inviting public commentary on it. You said you'd never heard of him doing anything harmful, but he has, and examples have been provided on this thread. Tebow promotes homophobia and he opposes choice, because of his religion. But you think that because he's religious, he should not be ridiculed?

People are complicated. Sure, Tebow has his faults, just like all of us. In my opinion, the good he does outweighs by a long shot any perceived "offense". I really find it interesting the nerve I touched by merely suggesting he is a good person.

The assumptions have the effect of putting words in my mouth.

I never once asserted that because he is religious, he should not be ridiculed. That is your bias, not mine.

My assertion is that he is a good person, and people in this thread are only ridiculing him and holding him to an impossible standard BECAUSE he is religious.

My initial question was, and remains, why do people hate on him so much. Put another way, why does his faith bother YOU so much?

contains the very same assumption that this post of yours does. Where is this hate you speak of? Tebow is being ridiculed because he's ridiculous, not because anyone hates him or thinks he's a bad person. He's funny, not because he's religious, but because he's made such a big goofy show of his religion. He's turned himself and his faith into a joke.

They don’t literally mean hate, more like disrespect or ridicule. Could be actual hate too, but that was not the context in which it was said.
