After weekend of storms in Midwest, severe weather risk expands to East Coast.
Strong to severe thunderstorms with very gusty winds are likely over parts of the Eastern Seaboard.
Residents of the Corn Belt and Mid-South are picking up the pieces after a weekend of violent weather, which claimed seven lives in Iowa and yielded more than three dozen reports of tornadoes. Now the severe weather threat is expanding east, encompassing the Appalachians and East Coast on Monday.
Cities from Atlanta to Nashville to Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia are expected to get a line of gusty downpours and embedded thunderstorms that could produce wind gusts in excess of 50 mph. The storms come amid a dramatic seasonal reversal that will bring an abrupt end to summerlike warmth preceding a cold front.
Its the first taste of what looks to be an increasingly active weather pattern heading into mid-March, with several additional storm systems that bear watching in the coming weeks.
