That is not so far out of the realm of possibility!

Decades ago, I was hiding out in a basement during a tornado. I had a new car which I was very worried was going to be damaged.

Sure enough, the tornado lifted it up. It went straight up but then it went straight down, like it was on an invisible elevator. No damage other than being plastered with mud.

You don't need to be near the actual funnel to be in danger. The debris left in the road alone would be a significant hazard.
