Is that the circular effect? I only know them as solar halos. Nice pic!

I've only photographed one - five or six years ago on a winter morning at the beach.

A rainbow is caused by reflection of the sun by raindrops.
A sun dog is caused by transmission of light by ice crystals.

Hence, the opposite directions. With the sun or against it, and the red-violet (ROYGBIV to astronomers and such) to violet-red.

From memory, meteorologists can chime in.

I got one like yours but instead of using the horizon to block the sun, I used my rain gutter!!

Will share sometime.
