Waht do you think of how "loners" are portrayed in books and other media?

I was thinking of the literary character of a "loner" and how they are portrayed.
Very common is the " white knight", the " loner hero" type.
Lee Child being the most recent to develop such a character in his many Jack Reacher novels.
( which I have read and liked, in a mental popcorn sort of way)

I read somewhere that loner sociopaths are just failed joiners. If I can find the book I'll add it.

(nose in a book in the corner).

It didn't dawn on me until I was in my 40s that I could have grabbed a gun and taken care of some of my "problems" ... I'd probably be out of prison by now ...

You know, the "demented loner" meme which litters the movies and cheap fiction.
