Japanese public watching less TV: broadcasting research institute

The proportion of people who watch little to no television per day has risen compared to five years ago, the NHK Broadcasting Culture Research Institute has found.

The survey was conducted from February to March of this year, covering 3,600 people aged 16 and over nationwide, of which 2,442 -- or 67.8 percent -- provided valid responses.

The proportion of people who said they watched between 30 minutes to 2 hours of television a day went from 34 percent in 2010 to 38 percent in 2015. Those who said they rarely watch television or did not watch any television went from 4 percent in 2010 to 6 percent in 2015. This marked the first time since 1985, when the research institute began tracking viewing trends, that the proportion of people watching between 30 minutes to 2 hours of television a day increased.

Around 60 percent of respondents aged 70 or older said they watched at least 4 hours of television per day. Meanwhile, the ratio of those who watched 2 hours or less of television per day has increased among all age brackets, with the proportion of those between the ages of 10 and 59 reaching at least 50 percent.
