Carp to don No. 86 to mark A-bombing

The Yomiuri Shimbun All Hiroshima Toyo Carp players and coaches will wear uniforms with the number 86 during a game against the Hanshin Tigers at Mazda Stadium in Hiroshima on Aug. 6, marking the 70th anniversary since the atomic bombing, the Nippon Professional Baseball team has announced.

The number 86 refers to the eighth month of the year and sixth day of that month — Aug. 6.

The uniforms will have the words “PEACE” across the chest and “HIROSHIMA” over the number. An image of a dove, the symbol for peace, is printed on the right side of the cap.

The decision to wear the uniform was made because awareness of the bombing has waned in recent years, as shown in a Hiroshima municipal board of education survey in 2010 in which only 33 percent of fourth- to sixth-year primary school students were able to answer the correct date and time when the atomic bomb was dropped — 8:15 a.m. on Aug. 6, 1945.
