Businessman revives Nikko springwater ice
By Miho Saeki / Yomiuri Shimbun Staff WriterUTSUNOMIYA Heaps of shaved ice standing 15 centimeters tall in glasses are brought to families and couples visiting Nikko Kirifuri Highlands Chirorin-mura, a tourism facility in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture.
Yuichiro Yamamoto, the president of ice dealer Koriya Tokujiro, serves the summer delicacy made from Nikko springwater that froze naturally and was cut out of his ice-making ponds in winter.
Once the ice hits your tongue, it gently melts and disappears. Customers are heard to say things like: Its fluffy and soft, and Im not getting a brain freeze. Its not like regular shaved ice.
At Chirorin-mura, shaved ice is served with a variety of syrups flavored with things like local Tochiotome brand strawberries and blueberries. The ice is served from around the Golden Week holiday period in spring through late November.
