The Great Seungri Scandal- South Korean entertainment industry
I've been seeing these news reports of scandal in the Korean entertainment world concerning drugs, sex abuse, prostitution, and other corruption, frequently in the mainstream South Korean media since the beginning of the year. I ignored them because my interest wasn't sufficient to bother understanding the details of the accusations and denials as the disclosures and investigations proceed. Korean pop culture is a corporate culture known as consumer culture, (sobija moonhwa 소비자 문화 ) and it is regarded unfavorably by some conventional sociologists and psychologists in South Korea.
But these performers are famous in South Korea especially among the younger generation, and perhaps more generally in Asia, given the standing of Hallyu/ Korean wave as a cultural phenomenon. There is a portion of the video where Seungri's recordings are alleged to have outsold the western "icons" such as Michael Jackson and others. So I thought, this video producer has done a service by summarizing the gist of the social scandal. It's all translated to English, so one can watch once and forget about it, saving a lot of time and effort. Various performing artists from different bands or productions were suspected of crimes after discussing or displaying illegal acts in chat rooms.
