CNN’s Van Jones: Democratic Base in ‘Full-on Rebellion’ Against Hillary Clinton

Former Obama advisor and CNN contributor Van Jones said Tuesday that we are witnessing a “full-on rebellion” within the Democratic Party against Hillary Clinton, predicting that Bernie Sanders would win the first two primary states.

Jones made the comments after New Day host Alisyn Camerota pointed out that polls show Clinton possibly losing in both Iowa and New Hampshire. Jones urged restraint, pointing out that Bill Clinton also lost New Hampshire and Iowa in his 1992 presidential run and went on to win.

“But something extraordinary is happening here; there is a full-on rebellion at the grassroots level of the Democratic Party,” he said. “MoveOn.org, or biggest progressive organization, endorsed Bernie Sanders last night. Overwhelmingly, 67%.”

Actually, MoveOn endorsed him with 78% of the vote.

Clinton continues to receive overwhelmingly positive ratings from Democrats nationally, with 84 percent rating her favorably and 15 percent unfavorably — almost identical to her 83-14 split in November. Sanders is rated positively by a 58-31 margin — also very similar to a 54-25 margin in the previous survey.

of the Democratic party than they do of Moveon.org.

And that's obvious by their numbers. The vast percentage of them already supported Bernie -- before the endorsement. OTOH, polls show that similar numbers of minority voters support Hillary.

So, yeah, Moveon is the "base" as long as you leave out African Americans, Latinos, and people over 50.

Hillary has the support of the top union brass in those unions. Not the support of the people, the workers.

Do you know that the AFGE (Union For Government Employees) is up in arms because their top executives went ahead and endorsed Hillary Clinton without having a full-member vote? They are beginning to conduct their own votes in their local unions, and they will release the results of these votes to the public. Bernie is winning by 80 percent in these votes.

So typical of the Clinton camp. Tout trophies that mean nothing. Meanwhile, behind the scenes--the workers do not support her.

If by "Democratic base" you mean mostly white, mostly male progressives, with some (often younger) women and some people of color added, then yes. But the Democratic base includes women and people of color in much larger numbers than that, and those demographics generally lean towards Hillary.

I'm not trying to deny Bernie's recent surge in the first two primary states. But the gender gap in Iowa, for example, and the large African-American support for Hillary in more diverse states, sketch a more complex picture of the base than what Van Jones suggests.

The more than 100,000 people who have jammed into arenas in Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle, Phoenix, Houston, Dallas, New Orleans, Madison and other cities should be a wake up call for anyone still on the sidelines in the critical 2016 election campaign.

National Nurses United, I'm proud to say, has endorsed Senator Bernie Sanders for many of the same reasons that have brought those 100,000 people to their feet.

Bernie Sanders aligns perfectly with nurses on the most critical problems facing our nation, from income inequality to guaranteeing healthcare to all to holding Wall Street and corporations to account to opening the doors to college education for everyone to racial justice to the climate crisis.

Those are the same issues that animate nurses when we talk about voting for nurses' values -- caring, compassion and community to heal America.

Wed Jan 13, 2016, 12:45 PM
Jan 2016
Voting-age women under the age of 35 now favor Sanders by 20 percentage points over Clinton. You read that right: Young female voters support Bernie Sanders by an expansive margin.

Move Over 'Berniebros': A Wave of Young Women Is Boosting Bernie Sanders
Yes, there's a big gender gap among young voters backing Sanders, but it's not among men

For anyone who has worked the crowd at a Sanders rally on a college campus, these results are not entirely surprising. At a rally at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, last October, by far the most enthusiastic Sanders supporters I met were young women. A 19-year-old African-American freshman named Aiyha Abdelbagi — who wore a light-blue hijab and pink Bernie '16 button to the rally — gave a typical answer when asked why she was supporting Sanders: "He's for the people, especially college students and African-Americans," she told me. "His answer on the Black Lives Matter question at the [first] Democratic debate put me on board, confirmed everything for me."

When I pressed Abdelbagi on why she hadn't cottoned to Clinton, she shot me a smile. "Just because I’m a girl?" she said. "Just because she [Clinton] is a girl doesn’t mean I’m going to support her. Nope, not at all. That's not what feminism is about."

Honestly for my generation, we were more afraid of Ronnie Ray-gun than some far-off Soviet threat. He tore down the social contract we had grown up believing was going to be there when we came of age, and by the time most of us came of age, the factories started closing, the chance at an affordable education was slipping away, high unemployment and high interest rates meant we couldn’t afford cars or a house. Our way of dealing with it was mostly through our loud, angry punk music and for a lot of us, myself included, we turned our anger into votes. They ignored us the way they ignore the youth of today, and so many just gave up so they won.

I hope to god all the young people who are getting turned on by Bernie don’t wimp out. We’ll never get anything changed without you all. Us old people can’t do it alone.

the ancient middle, 1970s style, when for Democrats there was more
of a social safety net before that term was even coined, and for
Republicans more clearly defined racial lines

Trump's hair is 1978 chic, he is a New York Republican. How he sells
himself as a goody two shoes to the Fundamentalist base will be
interesting. Casino gambling Family Values perfect together.

Sanders is 1977 style Democratic liberalism. Hillary will have problems with
that because her bubba hubby so eroded the teeth of the New Deal
by compromising with Wall Street

Establishment Democrats allowed Wall Street to ABUSE the American people with zero repercussions. This is hardly something the American people can overlook.

The media (with zero objectivity) tells the American people that we have this huge deficit all because of Social Security and Medicare, moocher people on disability and poor people on food stamps. We are supposed to believe this after what Wall Street did and the bullshit Iraq War sold to us by said media.

Guess what. We no longer believe a fucking thing the media has to say.

I think that just like in 2008, the media smells blood and it thrills them no end because it improves their ratings. They don't give a crap about either Hillary or Sanders, they just want to muddy the waters to make the race more competitive. Until the most recent polls, there was little drama in the Democratic primary. The drama was with the Republicans.

Love her or hate her, Hillary Clinton is no idiot. Sure, she comes with baggage, but what politician doesn't? Compared to the Republican candidates, I'd take her baggage any day.

All she had to do was essentially agree with Bernie - they pretty much agree on the issues anyway - but highlight the differences between them on how she would accomplish those objectives. To have her daughter get out there and claim Bernie plans to disembowel the ACA, when in fact he would seek something far better - single payer - was just plain stupid, and she seems to be paying a large price for it. Someone in her campaign seriously steered her wrong, or, if the attack approach was her idea, someone failed to rein her in.

Her Iraq War vote plus all her tough talk on foreign policy is too much baggage for me. Around 500,000 people are dead over there because of her vote. That's a lot of bodies and lives ruined, very heavy baggage.

117. Van Jones VERY SHORT LIFE as an "Obama aide"
Thu Jan 14, 2016, 02:26 AM
Jan 2016

In March 2009, Jones was appointed by President Barack Obama to the newly created position of Special Advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality, where he worked with various "agencies and departments to advance the administration's climate and energy initiatives, with a special focus on improving vulnerable communities."[7][8] In July 2009 he became embroiled in a controversy[9] over his past political activities, including a public comment disparaging congressional Republicans, his name appearing on a petition for 911Truth.org, and one-time involvement with a socialist collective during the 1990s.[10][11][12][13] For these issues, Van Jones was heavily criticized by conservatives.[14] Jones resigned from the position in early September 2009.[9] "On the eve of historic fights for health care and clean energy, opponents of reform have mounted a vicious smear campaign against me," Jones said in his resignation statement. "They are using lies and distortions to distract and divide."[10]

Given the raw anger from most all Americans...Repubs/Dems alike (base)..I believe there is something uniquely different going on. Strategies successfully used before aren't going to work this time around.
I personally think it an error to try and "geographically kettle" voters.
Just get out there - give it your all...because this time, It appears as tho the Voters will decide...sans rigging the voting machines..and the PAB would Never do that, right?

It sure Seems - in 2016 -Party affiliation/loyalty doesn't seem to hold the same weight as it used to.

the correct decision (motives) nor a long term solution. No one bothered to ask the electorate how these "shiny new gop lite" laws/rules/policies were working out for them. And when we (the base) complained and tried to be a part of it all-we were hung up on, ignored, shouted down and/or otherwise negated-until elections.
Over the years we voted for Dems just to keep "them" out. People tire of that over-time.
Not a good scenario, imo.

re·bel·lion
/rəˈbelyən/
noun
noun: rebellion; plural noun: rebellions

an act of violent or open resistance to an established government or ruler.
"the authorities put down a rebellion by landless colonials"
synonyms: uprising, revolt, insurrection, mutiny, revolution, insurgence, insurgency; More
rioting, riot, disorder, unrest
"troops suppressed the rebellion"
the action or process of resisting authority, control, or convention.
"an act of teenage rebellion"
synonyms: defiance, disobedience, rebelliousness, insubordination, subversion, subversiveness, resistance
"an act of rebellion"

I would not call it rebellion, as Hillary is not an established ruler. We are a "democracy" so we do not have rulers, we have representatives.

Our representatives need to learn their place.

208. Bill Clinton did not actively contest Iowa in 1992
Fri Jan 15, 2016, 12:48 AM
Jan 2016

against favorite son Tom Harkin, so to say that he lost both Iowa and New Hampshire
(and then came back to win the nomination)
is somewhat misleading.

Other Democrats mostly just bypassed Iowa in 1992, with Harkin expected to win it easily, which he did with absolutely no further benefit.

Bill was a close second-place in New Hampshire, the first primary he actively contested,
and successfully spun it as a victory of sorts.
