2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI proudly stand with the Des Moines Register in endorsing Hillary Clinton
If theres one thing Democrats and Republicans agree on this year, its the fact that the next president will face enormous challenges.
Domestically, this president must work with Congress in confronting the issues of immigration, health care, increased threats to national security, the disappearing middle class, the growing deficit, Social Security solvency, gun control, renewable energy, sentencing reform and more.
On the world stage, this president will have to work with foreign leaders in dealing with ISIS and other terrorists, climate change, the containment of nuclear threats posed in North Korea and Iran, the Russian incursions in Ukraine and foreign trade.

(99,710 posts)There is almost no way it can hurt unless you believe someone will think to themselves they hate the Register and therefore won't caucus for Hillary...
It might hurt Rubio though. i suspect Trump uses it against him.

(99,710 posts)The campaign between Bruce Braley and Joni Ernst for the U.S. Senate has been an exhibition of American politics at its worst. It has been a $28 million parade of dismal attack ads that have reduced the candidates to evil caricatures.
Which is sad because both candidates competing to succeed retiring Sen. Tom Harkin are decent and honorable with strong credentials and compelling biographies.
Braley has served eight years in the U.S. House representing Iowa's 1st District. He grew up in Brooklyn and worked his way through Iowa State University and the University of Iowa law school and practiced law in Waterloo before running for the House in 2006.
Ernst grew up on a family farm near Red Oak, attended Iowa State University with the help of scholarships and money earned working summers with her father's construction business. She is a lieutenant colonel in the Iowa Army National Guard and served as Montgomery County auditor before being elected to the Iowa Senate.
Despite comparable individual strengths, however, there are clear differences between the two on important issues. Based on those differences, we believe Braley is clearly better suited to represent Iowa in the U.S. Senate.

I suggest you go back and check The Register's endorsements. They have endorsed a whole lot more Democrats than Republicants.

So this is probably a scenario that is seen by interior polling for the Clinton team and the reason Hillary is turning up the Heat with the Republican style attacks.

(6,994 posts)endorse one candidate. So then the Des Moines Register just cant decide which candidate to recommend so they endorse a
Republican and a (cough cough) Democrat ?
Empowerer
(3,900 posts)Newspapers usually do endorse a Republican in the Republican primary and a Democrat in the Democratic primary.
And then when the Democrat who wins the Democratic primary runs against the Republican who won the Republican primary, the newspapers endorse one candidate because it's one election.
Nothing nefarious here at all . . .
