Years ago, it might have been considered "irresponsible" but as with most things.....

Some states prohibit it, but most allow it. Biden ran for both Senate and VP in 2008 and crushed Christine O'Donnell (yes, the I'm not a witch one). She lost again in 2010 against now Senator Chris Coons.

In Wisconsin, they have a "Favorite Son" law that permits a candidate's name to be on the ballot twice - but only if that candidate is running for President or Vice President.
