2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumAn interesting observation (mine) about Sanders "America" ad
(with Simon and Garfunkel song)
It is a feel good ad, with happiness. Missing are Sanders' Old Testament style angry comments.
(Although I've heard it is being criticized as Lily White, like.... Iowa and New Hampshire..)

(8,203 posts)It motivates people and increases turnout. Negative ads, at this point, depress turnout. It's the right ad at the right moment. (Although I do think he made a mistake having too few POC in the ad, regardless of where it is playing. I notice newer versions of the ad have made that correction.)

(50,986 posts)carefully at the ad's success in representing many different kinds of Americans.
Quite a few are represented. Notably under-represented are millionaires and billionaires.
The ad has a zillion hits in just a couple days. I'd call it an ass-kicking success.

(2,352 posts)The original lyrics to "America" are not full of hope and joy. They are pretty grim.
Let us be lovers,
We'll marry our fortunes together.
I've got some real estate
Here in my bag.
So we bought a pack of cigarettes,
And Mrs. Wagner's pies,
And walked off
To look for America.
"Kathy", I said,
As we boarded a Greyhound in Pittsburgh,
Michigan seems like a dream to me now.
It took me four days
To hitch-hike from Saginaw.
"I've come to look for America."
Laughing on the bus,
Playing games with the faces,
She said the man in the gabardine suit
Was a spy.
I said, "Be careful,
His bow tie is really a camera."
"Toss me a cigarette,
I think there's one in my raincoat."
We smoked the last one
So I looked at the scenery,
She read her magazine;
And the moon rose over an open field.
"Kathy, I'm lost", I said,
Though I know she was sleeping.
"I'm empty and aching and
I don't know why."
Counting the cars
On the New Jersey Turnpike
The've all come
To look for America,
All come to look for America,
All come to look for America.
But it's been 50+ years, and the Boomers, their kids, and their grandkids are making the Big Wave that will wash away that time of quiet desperation, and bring America to the Promised Land it was always meant to be....for everyone!

(46,179 posts)I know that the song speaks to the hope of American possibility, looking at what is and looking for that hope for better things. Despite the difference between reality and vision, all have still come. And we're still looking. We haven't given up.
I find the song fits America today as well as it did 50 years ago, when I was 5 years old. The fact that our hope is still there, is rising during this primary season, is rolling across America, certainly is joyful for me.

(23,867 posts)I've been wanting to see ads that show people living their lives in a progressive society. Having 12 weeks of maternal leave. Higher wages. Better working conditions which include a democratic workplace. It's not sticking one's neck out because it's already being done somewhere else.

(22,308 posts)and all the others have angry tones. Even Hillary's "closing argument" ad has fighters taking off from an aircraft carrier and Republicans firing assault rifles.
This is the one that will stand out. It is uplifting and hopeful, as well as being inclusive. Everyone who has gone to see Bernie, or who even thought about going to see Bernie, will picture himself/herself in that ad.
It was a brilliant move by a terrific candidate with a well run campaign.

As a gay person I'm OUTRAGED ! *OUTRAGED*, do you hear? And I'm going to demonstrate said outrage by pouting vigorously, seething mightily, growing increasingly bitter and then casting my primary vote for Ms. "Marriage is a sacred bond between a man and a women."
Take that, Bernie!
