2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumRomney: ‘There is no question in my mind. We’re going to win.’
Mitt Romney insisted he's going to win the presidencydespite polls showing him losing ground to President Barack Obama in battleground states.
In an interview with NBC News' Peter Alexander, the Republican presidential nominee rejected the idea that he's failed to connect with voters anxious over issues like high unemployment and the struggling economy.
"We're going to win. There is no question in my mind. We're going to win," Romney told NBC on Monday in Colorado, where he's campaigning. "The polls go up, polls go down. There've been some weeks I am ahead, some weeks I am behind. You know, all these states that voted for Barack Obama the last time, right now the majority of people in those states are saying that they don't want to vote for Barack Obama. My job is to make sure they understand what I stand for, they understand the path forward I would take. If I do that well, I'll be elected president, and I expect to do it well."
Romney talked to NBC News at the airport in Denver just before flying to a rally in Pueblo. His campaign scheduled a round of last-minute interviews with the three major television networksABC, CBS and NBCto allow Romney to respond to Obama's Sunday interview with CBS' "60 Minutes."

(60,536 posts)he's trying to hold on to what he's got. I'm sure he's not interested in replaying McCain's defeat, or even Barry Goldwater's. His staff is telling him the truth...and telling him what to say in order to keep the faithful on board. The bad thing, I think, is the simple fact his campaign staff is inept, not qualified for the positions they hold in the campaign.
I think the absence of Queen Ann from the campaign is telling too. Yes, she's really bad but, the Queen knows the truth too; she couldn't be trusted to be quiet about what she knows. Then too, she may be suffering severe fatigue from her MS; a flare up caused by long hours on the campaign trail, stress brought on by the campaign and what she knows.

This is a "MUST WIN" election for the repugs. Their ideology is on the line. The future of the G.O.P. is on the line.

(25,251 posts)Rmoney seems too confident that he's got this in the bag and that worries me. What does he know? Was he given assurances that this election will be bought and paid for and/or stolen for him? Even though he's had a number bad weeks and is losing ground in the polls - he still thinks he's tied with the President. He still comes off cocksure that he's going to win. I'm very suspicious as to what he and the Repugs are planning in these last 40 or so days.
He is either delusional. Or he has orders from his Repug handlers to transmit confidence so he doesn't bring down the downticket races. Or he knows that they are going to steel it for him or that he's bought this election off.
What is it?

(534 posts)One of the first things you learn in military leadership classes is never to show doubt in front of your command. It's the same thing in MBA programs. Your company may be six months into real insolvency, the CFO absconded with what remains of the working capital, and customers are lining up ten deep protesting your defective products, but you never, ever let the mask of confidence slip.
You can only steal an election when the results are close enough anyway that you don't have to do it too many places - there are just too many chances of getting caught otherwise. The farther you slip outside the margin of error, the harder it is to explain away the discrepancies. Romney is slipping outside that margin of error, and he's now acting like a CEO that knows that if he allows even a crack of what he really feels out, it's over. However, the stress is also leaving him a basket case, and is transmuting into panic up and down the ticket.
If Romney can do even remotely well in the debates, he still may pull it through, but consider that he needed to "knock it out of the park" at the RNC and he failed. I think he'll crack in the debates.

(5,810 posts)Read any of the latest polling data. And his campaign staff can't tell him the truth...the emperor is fully clothed, right? Mitt has to keep telling himself that (and I'm sure Ann is told this, too) so that they can get out there and keep up the facade. If they admitted the truth they would not be able to hide that. So they play this game and act like all is well, when every indicator is pointing the other way.
I also think this is a lame strategy used to keep the base (and potential donors) on board. No one wants to back a loser. So they keep insisting it's still an open question who will win. We are very close to having a baked cake but they will never admit it.
I could almost feel sorry for Romney (and Ryan) if I had not seen that tape where he talks in such mean spirited, nasty terms about those of us in 47 % who will never vote for him. But thank goodness I did see it and I can rest easy knowing what a horrible man he is....and so is his running mate. They deserve each other.

(16,916 posts)Obama's support is still slightly under 50%. That's changing rapidly, but the real point that Romney is avoiding is that no matter how far beneath that 50% mark Obama sits, Romney is seated even further behind.
Yeah, the majority of people in those states are saying (right now) that they don't want to vote for Barack Obama, but that doesn't mean that they are saying that they do want to vote for Mitt Romney.

(22,897 posts)If they can manipulate the data the way (the late) Mike Connell did-- we'll lose for sure
The filing also includes the revealing deposition of the late Michael Connell. Connell served as the IT guru for the Bush family and Karl Rove. Connell ran the private IT firm GovTech that created the controversial system that transferred Ohio's vote count late on election night 2004 to a partisan Republican server site in Chattanooga, Tennessee owned by SmarTech. That is when the vote shift happened, not predicted by the exit polls, that led to Bush's unexpected victory. Connell died a month and a half after giving this deposition in a suspicious small plane crash.

(5,810 posts)Conventional wisdom would say you never admit defeat. You cannot think that way. So he has to double down on his assertion that he is winning and will win the election.
He will keep up this face until he makes his concession speech. I am looking forward to that spectacle and also to seeing Ryan standing there with him.....close enough to smell the stench. LOL
