2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIf Hillary wins the nomination and Bernie runs as an independent, who do you support?
Seen a lot of talk about Bloomberg and whatever hypothetical support he would have. So I want to know, if Hillary wins the nomination fair and square and Bernie decides to run as an independent, who do you support? A lot of people are saying they'll support the Democratic nominee, but I have a hard time believing Bernie supporters will support Hillary over Bernie if that's what it came down to.

(4,452 posts)He stated originally he was running as a Democrat specifically so as not to e a spoiler.
Anyone questioning "What would you do if?" is simply trolling.
John Poet
(2,510 posts)to attempt to run as an independent after contesting a party's nomination, because "sore loser laws" would prevent him from getting on the ballot in many states where he had already appeared on a primary ballot.
(He didn't represent me geographically.)
Ignoring that he isn't going to run as an independent, I'd lean towards still supporting him as an independent. My reservation would be that in doing so, I don't put the GOP candidate in the White House.

I'll support whatever Democrat gets the nomination.
See, was that so hard?

(5,621 posts)You have nothing to worry about with dyed in the wool Democrats, they will hold their nose and vote for Hillary. Those who are recent dems, indies and sometime voter, will probably not vote for Hillary. The Democratic party only has about 29% of those who are registered to vote, and of those 29%, many will not vote for Hillary.
What Hillary supporters fail to see is that the surges for Bernie, are for BERNIE, not the Democratic party. You can bet that the vast majority of new to the election process will not vote for Hillary, no matter what Bernie asks them to do. They are coming for the revolution, not to keep things the same. They will go back home and keep their heads down hoping to make it until someone else comes along that offers them REAL CHANGE, not smoke and mirrors. Or they will write in a vote for Bernie any way, create a new party that will destroy the Democratic party, or say 'fuck it' nothing will ever change and start an armed revolution.

one screaming exception...if bernie gets the delegates through popular vote and the supers steal it for hillary by refusing to switch, then all bets are off, since that will be an illegitimate nom.
thinking that unlikely, however, since they know such a move would destroy whats left of the party.

I hope to vote for the greater good instead of just voting for the lesser evil. The results of the primary will decide if I am am have that opportunity or not.

What if Hillary runs as an independent? Who cares? Neither Clinton nor Sanders is going to run as an independent.

The point is moot though because Bernie would never do this.

(13,305 posts)That's what I'm waiting to see. I don't support her in the primary. Hell, I think I'd probably choose O'Malley in the primary over Hillary. I'm not nearly as much of a "Bernie supporter" as I am a "Hillary skeptic".
However, I'm taking a wait and see approach as to what kind of General election campaign she runs. Will she continue this negativity and aversion with regard to the concept of looking for big change? Or will she and Bill continue their "Hey, things suck get used to it." attitude?
Will she move to the left and adopt a more progressive tone to her campaign and it's goals? Or will she hippie punch her way to trying to get the approval of the beltway media and people who she will never, ever get to support her no matter what she says and does?
I'm not committing to anything either way at this point.

(13,305 posts)But I want to see how she is when there are no road blocks. Right now she's at least being forced to pretend she has some progressive positions and that she would act on those supposed principles. I want to see how she is when she's running against a fellow conservative.

(16,974 posts)Nice trap to try to get people stoned. I will vote for the down ticket races. I will not vote for Hillary. Others will do as they see fit, I do not talk for them or advocate they do not vote. I am in a state that will not matter in the general for the presidential ticket. Reliably very red.

(4,377 posts)And that would be if he won a large majority in the primaries but the superdelegates then gave the race to Hillary anyway.
Even then I don't think he'd actually do it, but I'm damn sure a lot of his surrogates would call for him to. It would be a civil war in the party.

(4,558 posts)Senator Sanders has drummed up a lot of support. He has tapped into, and struck the nerve of people who are fed up, and feel marginalized or jaded with the status quo.
One thing the Senator is not: stupid. A Hillary/Trump or Hillary/Cruz (or any other general) with a third party Sanders would guarantee a Republican win. I can't imagine for a second that Senator Sanders would do that. At the end of the day he cares too much. If he can't win the Democratic ticket, he knows he won't win the presidency as a 3rd party candidate. Worse, he will likely lose much of his credibility, and a not so insignificant number of his supporters.
This is insulting and demeaning to those who support the Senator, and would be every bit as wrong to suggest or ask people who declare loyalty if Hillary ran 3rd party.
Yes, if Hillary wins, some of the support that Sanders garnered will be bitter enough to risk a Republican presidency. I don't agree with it, but it is their vote and their right. With all that's at risk, I'm hoping that number won't be enough to cost us the Presidency.
I am not in those number, but I'm sure that there are democrats that support Hillary, that won't support Sanders as well. I don't agree with them, but again it is their vote and their right.
