"...In the fall of 1996, locked in a tough re-election fight against Republican Susan Sweetser, then-Rep. Sanders got a big boost when feminist writer and activist Gloria Steinem came to Burlington. At the time, Sweetser was running negative ads attacking Sanders' liberal positions, and so the Sanders campaign held an event to highlight his support among progressive women. An opening act, a former state senator, told the audience that "a feminist is a person who challenges the power structure of our country" and "Bernie Sanders is that kind of feminist." When it was Steinem's turn, she started off with an announcement: "I'm only here today to make Bernie Sanders an honorary woman..."

35. Susan Sweetser was widely mocked by the media but

I've always remembered what a horrific ordeal she went through:

<snip>

Shortly after his release, on Dec. 7, 1980, Percy abducted Susan Sweetser at gunpoint, beat her, choked her, forced her to engage in oral sex and raped her repeatedly. She was 21, three months pregnant with her first child.

Percy was arrested 10 days later, and released on bail of only $5,000. Vermont is friendly to felons.

On Jan. 16, 1981, while free on this token bail, Percy abducted Sue Kremelberg, taped her hands with electrician's tape, raped her again and again and drove her into Connecticut. After nine hours of terror she escaped at a traffic light in Brookfield. Police caught him.

Now we get to the rotten part.

Percy went on trial for the rape of Susan Sweetser in October 1981. His primary defense was insanity by reason of ''post-Vietnam trauma.'' A jury found him guilty and the judge sentenced him to 16 to 20 years in prison. State-appointed defense lawyers appealed.

made her one of the most progressive people there. Ontheissues.org rated her, based on her voting record, as "hard core liberal." Not quite as far left as Bernie, but further left than Biden and Obama.

She voted for Bush to enforce the UN resolutions, which allowed him to act if they found WMD's. They never found WMD's but Bush went to war anyway.

At that point Bush had a Congress with both houses under the control of the Rethugs, so he didn't need the IWR anyway.

32. She voted for it, promoted it and endorsed the invasion:
Tue Jan 26, 2016, 08:51 AM
Jan 2016

"In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including Al Qaeda members...

It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons. Should he succeed in that endeavor, he could alter the political and security landscape of the Middle East, which as we know all too well, effects American security.

This is a very difficult vote, this is probably the hardest decision I've ever had to make. Any vote that might lead to war should be hard, but I cast it with conviction."

In March 2003 she fully endorsed the invasion:

There is a very easy way to prevent anyone from being put into harm's way, and that is for Saddam Hussein to disarm, and I have absolutely no belief that he will. I have to say that this is something I have followed for more than a decade.

For now nearly 20 years, the principal reason why women and children in Iraq have suffered, is because of Saddam's leadership.

The very difficult question for all of us, is how does one bring about the disarmament of someone with such a proven track record of a commitment, if not an obsession, with weapons of mass destruction.

I ended up voting for the Resolution after carefully reviewing the information and intelligence I had available, talking with people whose opinions I trusted, trying to discount political or other factors that I didn't believe should be in any way a part of this decision, and it is unfortunate that we are at the point of a potential military action to enforce the resolution. That is not my preference, it would be far preferable if we had legitimate cooperation from Saddam Hussein, and a willingness on his part to disarm, and to account for his chemical and biological storehouses.

With respect to whose responsibility it is to disarm Saddam Hussein, I do not believe that given the attitudes of many people in the world community today that there would be a willingness to take on very difficult problems were it not for United States leadership.

This is all a matter of record.

30. It takes more than a bumper sticker
Tue Jan 26, 2016, 04:15 AM

Or a meme to impress me. I care about actual policy. I also think the organizations and individuals a campaign and its supporters target says a great deal about what they do and don't value. I learned that my reproductive rights and access to reproductive healthcare are less important than his ego and his campaign. I do not find that acceptable. Nor do I find convincing platitudes about equal pay with no discussion about how or whether he means to enforce that, particularly when he pretends raising the minimum wage wont be subject to the same gender and racial discrimination workers currently face.

In five debates, I gave heard the exact same slogans with few if any specifics. That and his refusal to engage seriously with foreign policy and even the cost of his own proposals has convinced me he is simply not qualified to be president. He's very good at coming up with slogans that successfully tap into the anger of the white middle-to upper-middle class. It's an impressive skill for a politician, but that he demonstrates no inclination to move beyond the slogans tells me he does not have the ability to perform as President.
