RE: Call to Action from Iowa College Students: Caucus for Martin O’Malley

Classes have started again here in Iowa and students have returned just in time for the big event: the Iowa caucuses. For the first time in several cycles, Iowa’s students are back on campus for the caucuses. Now with that opportunity comes a great responsibility.

Young Iowans must stand up and choose the new leadership we want for our generation. So today, we make a call to action to caucus goers and all our fellow young Iowans: choose new leadership, caucus for Governor Martin O’Malley.

Young Americans need a President who thinks like we do and shares our values. Martin O’Malley will bring the new leadership we need to build on President Obama’s progress and address the issues we care most about:

Martin O’Malley will bring people together and get things done. Governor O’Malley has a long record of rejecting divisiveness – that’s how he was able to do things in Maryland like passing marriage equality, abolishing the death penalty and enacting comprehensive gun safety legislation. O’Malley doesn’t denounce Republicans as his enemies, but instead knows how to work with them to enact change. That’s the kind of leadership millennials are looking for, and the new leadership we need to move past DC gridlock.

Martin O’Malley will make higher education more affordable. Governor O’Malley doesn’t just talk about this issue – he lives it every day, as he and his family continue to pay off loans that put his children through college. So he understands that skyrocketing tuition, room and board, and other fees are a huge burden. O’Malley’s plan will create a debt-free college option for every student that addresses all these costs, going beyond simply handing out free tuition. He’s laid out an extensive, detail-oriented plan on how he’d get it done which includes an option for national service. Moreover, O’Malley has actually done it before: as Governor of Maryland, he held college tuition to not a penny’s increase for four years in a row.

Martin O’Malley will turn the threat of climate change into an opportunity. Governor O’Malley has released the boldest, most progressive plan to harness the challenge and opportunity of climate change. He is the only candidate who has set the goal to make America’s electric grid powered by 100% clean energy by 2050, and create a clean energy economy with 5 million new jobs along the way. That’s the kind of bold leadership that put a man on the moon during our parents’ youth, and the bold leadership that will build up a clean energy economy through ours.

Martin O’Malley will consistently stand up for our American values. Whether it’s advocating welcoming refugees from Syria, fighting for immigration reform, releasing the most comprehensive criminal justice plan because he knows that black lives matter, or calling out the hateful and dangerous rhetoric from Donald Trump, Martin O’Malley consistently stands up for the American ideals of opportunity and inclusion. He understands that our strength as a country is in our diversity, and looks at the world through the more global perspective of our generation. He’s led the field and remained consistent in fighting for marriage equality and equal rights, and has a plan to move us to a more connected future.

Eight years ago Iowans caucused for change, and lifted up the leader of a new era in President Barack Obama. In order to continue moving forward, we must do so once again.

We cannot allow this race to be decided by national pundits, or polls, or big-money and endorsements. National eyes are on the people of Iowa as we fulfill our vital role of lifting up the voice of a new generation. And it’s important that students show up.

Governor O’Malley is the best choice for young Iowans, and for our country.

So on February 1st, we will be caucusing for Governor Martin O’Malley. We urge you, and all our fellow young Iowans and college students to join us.
