(146,317 posts)is part of the "establishment." The Constitution "establishes" Congress as our legislative body. It IS "the establishment."

(146,317 posts)One of only 100 at any given time. He's part of the establishment. No question about it.
AgingAmerican
(12,958 posts)He has always been an outsider. "multi-term Senator" is not the definition of the establishment.

(1,656 posts)Establishment
3 (usu. the Establishment) a group in a society exercising power and influence over matters of policy or taste, and seen as resisting change.
[ with adj. ] an influential group within a specified profession or area of activity: rumblings of discontent among the medical establishment.
Clearly Sanders is not part of the Establishment and Clinton is.

(94,594 posts)...unless you feel he's unable to influence others, in which case his "years of fighting for (issue of your choice)" are sort of pointless.

(4,387 posts)...and that was a pretty stupid thing to say. Despite this guys statement, it's still a pretty big stretch to say Bernie is part of the establishment as the term is being used this time around. If your definition of establishment is "Been there for a long time", then yes he is part of that establishment. If your definition of establishment is easily bought and paid for politician, then no, he is not part of that establishment.
ProudToBeLiberal
(3,964 posts)If you listen to him closely, he's not anti-Washington establishment. He rails against Wall Street, but he is surprisingly quiet about Washington. He's a creature of Washington so he can't be to anti Washington.
TCJ70
(4,387 posts)...he's been pretty clear with his message for years that we have a corrupt political system that slows progress. That's what the railing against PAC's and such is about. He also regularly questions the priorities of Washington. The message that it doesn't only take one guy to change things is also on point. That's my take on it anyway. Quiet isn't a word I would use to describe Sanders at all...
ProudToBeLiberal
(3,964 posts)He's been in Congress over 20 years. So, he isn't going to go to Washington to clean house like Mr. Smith. He is part of the system. There is no denying that.
TCJ70
(4,387 posts)...is about, though.
ProudToBeLiberal
(3,964 posts)He's not really calling for a revolution. You can't really be a revolutionary when you are so entrenched in the establishment in system. What he is really calling for is a bloodless coup. He is going to overthrow the ruling class from within the system.
immoderate
(20,885 posts)If you listen closely he is against it. He does favor the democratic process though. Is that establishment?
Do you see how stupid this thread is?

(20,234 posts)The "Establishment" as personified by the DLC/Third way/New democrats is not the same as the machinery necessary to govern.

(12,504 posts)decades of collecting a government check, running in elections, playing the political games, how does anyone ever claim they are not "establishment"?
Perhaps a definition would help. Not one presumed and manufactured by a Bernie surrogate, but a clarification from Bernie.

(975 posts)When voters first see Bernie most go "Who is he?" The establishment line only works if someone is known. Who in the hell other than a moron would look at someone they never seen or heard anything about and say "Ah, so it's HIS fault that things are so bad." Too damn funny and Clinton supporters think this will stick.

(7,231 posts)The issue is not whether Clinton or Sanders are or aren't part of the establishment, but whether they are willing to stand up to the establishment - in order to reform the corrupt and corrupting power structures that have pervaded our socio-politico-economic life.
Clinton is the status quo candidate, Sanders is the man willing to reform. But please, let's all just focus on the definition of establishment. So important...
