2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe Establishment is a construction
of our Constitution, which "established" our system of government. "The Establishment" includes the presidency, both houses of Congress, the federal courts, and our military. All were established in the Constitution.
Anyone who is part of any of those groups as a career is a member of "The Establishment" by definition.
We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

(12,958 posts)The establishment is the status quo within government. You are talking about the 'system' which is the framework of the government. The establishment are the status quo of the players within that system.

(9,822 posts)over the course of our American history is a continuation of rule by the landed gentry and merchant class, which is kind of what the founders had in mind.
It's hard to resist this dollar-driven inevitability, but it's worth doing.

(146,317 posts)That's what I think. And, I trust that they will do just that, leading up to the naming of a nominee of the party for President.
It's the system we use. I'll be part of the entire process, as always, and hope everyone takes part.
Good luck with your goals.
I'll be behind the nominee, regardless of who he or she is.

(146,317 posts)Since the Constitution "establishes" our system of government, I chose the definition that matched that, since the word "establish" appears in the Preamble to that document.
Here's Merriam Webster's complete definition (emphasis mine):
Popularity: Top 40% of words
1
: something established: as
a : a settled arrangement; especially : a code of laws
b : established church
c : a permanent civil or military organization
d : a place of business or residence with its furnishings and staff
e : a public or private institution
2
: an established order of society: as
a often capitalized : a group of social, economic, and political leaders who form a ruling class (as of a nation)
b often capitalized : a controlling group <the literary establishment>
3
a : the act of establishing
b : the state of being established
Some appear to be using the 2a definition and thinking that is the only definition.

(3,431 posts)The MIC,CIA, and NSA were mentioned in the constitution?
And if not, they are not part of the establishment?
A very strange interpretation of the word establishment.

(2,405 posts)Bernie Sanders has been in Congress for 25 years; he is the establishment and that is not a bad thing. But for his supporters to say he is the anti-establishment is untrue.
