A Clinton-Castro ticket gets put to an early test in Iowa

Julian Castro, a rising star in the Democratic Party, was stumping for Hillary Clinton in southeastern Iowa on Sunday when a union leader extended a hand and a question in Spanish.

“I heard Clinton might pick you for vice president,” said Jose Pulido, who represents workers at a hog slaughterhouse that has helped draw thousands of Latinos to this small city straddling the icy Des Moines River.

Castro flashed a toothy smile. “Quien sabes,” he answered, shaking his head. Who knows?

As the secretary of Housing and Urban Development and former mayor of San Antonio, Castro’s ethnic roots, up-from-the-bootstraps story and quick ascent in politics have earned him comparisons to President Obama. He is frequently mentioned as a possible vice presidential pick for Clinton, should she prevail as her party's nominee.

In something of a test of Castro's campaigning abilities, he barnstormed Iowa in the final days leading up to the state's Feb. 1 caucus. He visited several small cities with growing Latino populations and warned voters about the dire consequences of a Clinton loss and the possible return of the White House to Republican control.

When he first came on the political scene, I'd have voted for him in an instant. libdem4life Jan 2016 #2

He has the heritage, the saavy, the Tejano Hispanic bi-lingual creds, and he is damn smart.

Then along came Bernie and Julian isn't enough for me to stay with HRC. But he has a bright future in politics...which is why PBO tapped him for HUD...got him to DC.

He is a tad young and inexperienced for the "heartbeat away" thingy, but I overlooked it then, and stick with that. It's just I've found a Presidential Candidate I prefer.

His mother was a leader in La Raza...an extreme Left organization in Los Angeles that makes Bernie Sanders look like a Right Winger...back in the day. So that's where he started. He's had to come Right to get Left, LOL. Not to discount Joaquin...he's equally amazing, but seems the family decided that Julian would go for the top spot. His family is adorable. Joaquin is not married.

Atzlan is a secessional title...retaking the lands stolen from the Mexicans.

Here is a sample...

At the height of our last period of activism; late 1960's and early 1970's the Chicano community realized that only through an independent political movement would we be able to achieve "real" political representation. By the beginning of the 1970's a movement to build a true independent political party had taken hold, Raza Unida activities date back to 1968 in Tejas, Colorado and California. Although the Tejas movement to create an indepent Chicano Party has been the one most popularized, Chicano Activists throughout Aztlan were busy building Chicano Indepent political actions.
In 1972 the First La Raza Unida Party National Convention was held, and Jose Angel Gutierrez was elected as National Chair for La Raza Unida Party. From 1970 to 1980 the Partido was involved in electoral, labor and social issues. By 1980 at the Second National Convention of La Raza Unida Party much of what was La Raza Unida Party was re-evaluated. It was a tthat convetnion that Juan Jose Pena from Albuquerque, Nuevo Mexico was elected (formally) as Chairperson. At this convention we took the position that our struggle was for the Liberation of Aztlan, and that Aztlan is composed of five southwestern states; California, Arizona, Nuevo Mexico, Tejas and Colorado. The PNLRU also took the position that our movimiento needed an ideology and that ideology MUST be based on OUR Nationalism,...Revolutionary Nationalism.
At present the Partido is still dedicated to struggling for the Self-Determination of the Chicano Mexicano people and the Liberation of Aztlan.
