Once people grasp this concept, certain things become a little clearer.

It's the newspaper of record for an enlightened ruling class that nonetheless wants to remain the ruling class. It is open-minded and progressive on many issues. However, anything that threatens the wealth and status of the ruling class tends to be ridiculed, dismissed, or ignored. And if that doesn't work, it gets dealt with rather harshly.
