2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWhy Bernie Is More Trustworthy on Foreign Policy Than Hillary:
Whether to go to war or not to go war is probably one of the most important decisions an elected official can be asked to make.
War means loss of life.
It means putting our troops in harm's way.
And it means the lives of untold numbers of innocent men, women and children.
I can't think of any more decision an elected official can be asked to make than this.
Both Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton were presented with that decision while in a position of trust given to them by the American people.
It's important to note that many ordinary people knew that the President who was asking for the Authorization to go to war, was lying to the American people.
This is Bernie Sanders explaining why he would not give that authority to President G.W. Bush:
This is Hillary Clinton explaining why she was voting for giving that authority to President G.W. Bush:
Bernie Sanders showed incredibly good judgement and foresight when he cast his vote against the AUMF that day.
Hillary Clinton showed extremely bad judgement and frightening lack of foresight when she cast her vote that day.
We need leaders who both good judgement and foresight who we can trust not to make mistakes when faced with such onerous decisions.
THIS may be one of the main reasons why I support Bernie Sanders.
I trust him never to send our troops into harms way unless the this country is in imminent danger.
He has been proven to have been tragically right in his assessment of the terrible consequences of that invasion.
Hillary now calls her assessment 'a mistake'.
Evolving is great, for ordinary people. But we not need leaders who have not yet evolved on major issues such as War and when this country should go to war and when it should not.
We need people who are capable WHILE in office of making such serious decisions.

(62,325 posts)that horrible decision. I find it hard to understand people who appear not to care about those who die, are tortured, who are maimed for life, all because of politicians who make such awful 'mistakes'.
This is why Bernie Sanders has the Veterans behind his campaign. THEY trust him not to do what Hillary did, and say so every day.
I'll take their word because no one knows with more certainty what a horrible decision that was.
Hillary does not have the Veterans' vote. For good reason.

Frylock, I don't know if you've invented this response to a word salad or whether others have used it before you--but either way, I'm in stitches. Too funny!

(62,325 posts)to listen to now, because what we were able to imagine, the terrible loss of life, has been even worse than what we did imagine. I can now see the bodies of the children, sent by photo journalists like Dahr Jamail, so that people would not forget that awful decision.
When she made that speech, I was shocked, up to then I fully expected her to do the right thing. I wondered what she was thinking, of the death and destruction that we all knew was going to happen??

(62,325 posts)invasion also. Obama from what I've read didn't want to go to Libya, but her State Dept was pushing him to do so.
You are right, toppling Gadaffi was a horrible mistake. At least for all those who would suffer the consequences, for the war profiteers, it was a wonderful thing. Just like Iraq

(62,325 posts)on Foreign Policy issues with the awesome power the president has to send our troops to war when she despite her finally admitting her decision on Iraq was WRONG, she still can't seem to find a war she doesn't think we should not be involved in?

(9,289 posts)It is really important for people to hear the speeches because they show that it wasn't just a difference over how to vote on the IWR. Sanders correctly saw through Bush's bullshit and predicted that war would undermine regional stability. Clinton parroted all of Bush's talking points about an Iraq-Al Qaeda connection and nuclear programs and WMDs, and supported the idea that preventive war was an acceptable option.

(62,325 posts)maybe that is why I was so naive. I KNEW, can't say why exactly, that Bush/Cheney/Rummy et al were lying to us.
But I thought the Democrats would all vote against them, not give them the appearance of 'bi-partisanship' they so badly wanted, at least.
To show the country that this was a Republican lie.
I listened to Sen. Byrd, who I did not know until then, and cried, because his speech that night was so moving, he was one of the few who mentioned the Iraqi people, what would happen to them.
Hillary I was sure, would oppose it so when she gave that speech was dumb founded.
I felt totally betrayed. How could someone who had been in the WH believe the lies, I had watched people talk about Iraq, how it been disarmed etc.
For me,, it was an awakening. Our party wasn't all I had thought it was. I truly admired though all the Dems who had the guts to stand up and say 'no', like Bernie.
And yes, he was so prescient, sadly.

(9,289 posts)and her support for Bush's ultimatum to Hussein on the eve of the invasion also undermine her bullshit excuse last night at the New Hampshire forum that she was just trying to give Bush leverage to allow the inspectors to do their work. She must think people have short memories or are really stupid. I hope most people last night saw through her distortion of the record.

Notice they never attack the right that way, just the 'left' because they know that there are intelligent people and not all from the 'left'. It's the same old 'silence the intellectuals, the ones speak out, who tell the truth' and label them.

I can forgive her making a bad call, they happen. But a point can be made that she isn't trustworthy to make another call.

(62,325 posts)Every life is precious to those who love them ...
As far as making a bad call, she trusted Bush/Cheney. But I'm not sure it was a bad call, that it isn't something she believes in, pre-emptive war. She pushed for another terrible disaster, Libya and said today I think that she believes in the policy of preemptive war, which means she has learned nothing from Iraq which is what destabilized the entire region, something Sanders was able to predict.
So whatever the truth, she has made some terrible 'mistakes' on FP and millions have suffered as a result.
