Michelle Obama wins cookie contest

Sorry, Ann Romney. But the cookie has crumbled in favor of the first lady.

Michelle Obama has won Family Circle’s 2012 Presidential Cookie Bake-Off, the magazine reports in its November issue.

Obama and Romney both submitted recipes to the contest, and – after more than 9,000 people weighed in – “just 287 votes separated the two women, our smallest margin ever,” Family Circle says.

Romney’s M&M cookies got 48.5 percent of votes, while Obama’s white and dark chocolate chip cookies won with 51.5 percent.

Family Circle notes that the bake-off, which it’s hosted since 1992, “has been a bell-weather in four out of five elections.”

The exception? Obama lost to Cindy McCain four years ago, despite complaints that the Arizona senator’s wife had cheated.

Mama Kaye’s White and Dark Chocolate Chip Cookies
Makes 5 dozen cookies
Prep: 15 minutes
Bake at 375° for 12 minutes per batch

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup (2 sticks) unsaltedbutter, softened
1 stick Crisco butter-flavored solid vegetable shortening
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 eggs
1 cup each white chocolate chips, milk chocolate chips and mint chocolate chips (or Andes mint pieces)
2 cups chopped walnuts

1. Heat oven to 375°.
2. Whisk together flour, baking soda and salt in a small bowl. In a large bowl with an electric mixer, cream butter, vegetable shortening, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract.
3. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition.
4. On low speed, beat in flour mixture. By hand, stir in white and milk chocolate chips, mint chips and walnuts.
5. Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto un-greased baking sheets.
6. Bake at 375° for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on baking sheets for 5 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely.

IN my experience a Mom like Michelle has that thing sealed up because of the extra pinch of "love" that is added.


TOTALLY non-scientific, but it's all subjective when it comes to cookies and Mom's anyway.

If he insulted an award-winning baker with that remark, imagine what his wife's cookies must taste like to him. As if she ever baked a cookie in her life.

In Michelle's cookie is both funny and completely awesome at the same time.

I'll say this: generations from now she will be the template future first ladies are measured by. Shades of Elanor Roosevelt.
