A new poll out today suggests that GOP accusations of intentional manipulation on the part of pollsters are resonating with the American public.
Roughly 42 percent of those surveyed by left-leaning Public Policy Polling said pollsters were manipulating their data in order to show President Obama with a lead, while 40 percent said that wasn't the case. The remaining 18 percent said they were not sure what to think.
The exact wording of the question: "Do you think pollsters are intentionally skewing their polls this year to help Barack Obama, or not?"
The results show that self-identified Republicans were particularly likely to buy into the pollsters-are-against-us conspiracy theory, with 71 percent saying that the recent major polls showing President Obama pulling ahead nationally and in key battleground states are biased against their candidate. That number balloons to 84 percent when we're talking exclusively about those respondents who said they were members of the Tea Party.

(223 posts)Well, I don't believe the polls are skewed. At least the official media polls. Super PAC polls, yes.
I finally answered a number last night that has called multiple times It was a voice automated huckabee sponsored call. Opening with how important my opinion was, it asked me if I am registered to vote; "yes". Do you consider yourself pro-life; "no". Are you a male; "no". Are you 50 or over; "no". Thank you very much for your time. Click.
They don't want an official reply to are you going to vote for Romney or Obama. Clearly your reply leads to the next question and as soon as you're not in their demographic they hang up. And it was all automated.

(60,536 posts)In 1972 famed American author Theodore White wrote How McGovern Won the Presidency and Why the Polls Were Wrong. I still have a copy of that book on my book shelf, I just shake my head every time I come across it.
I don't think Dems/liberals have gone off the deep end like the wing nuts are currently doing though.

(24,347 posts)and you DEFINITELY didn't see left-wing talking heads talking about the latest poll from a liberal version of UnskewedPolls where Kerry wins by 30 if you remove all the white men from the polling sample.

(90,061 posts)It is the easiest thing to shape a poll to fit your needs, you don't really even have to lie. All that is required is the proper selection of a non-random sample.
And of course you can always do multiple polls and then keep the best, while deep-sixing the rest.

(24,414 posts)Even Fox News polls???? Can anybody name any recent election where the polls and the final outcome were majorly out of sync? We know about occasional outlier polls but if you have multiple polls giving a pretty similar result then I would tend to give it more credence. Of course, the only "poll" that really matters is on Election Day and maybe we shall all be proven wrong and Romney will win and get a GOP Congress.

(35,699 posts)Not sure that I would give a straight answer to this, for example. I might say I was a tea party republican and yes I think the polls are skewed.

(13,992 posts)The alternative is for them to accept that fact that a majority of Americans think that their political philosophy is completely fucked up.
