(14,733 posts)that Americans tend to view themselves as 'middle class' even when they're working poor. We want to think of ourselves as 'middle class', but most don't know just how much the playing field is tilted.

(3,366 posts)until my income was HALVED immediately after the 2008 meltdown. I waited and waited for an upturn that never came.
Now I'm always astonished when I find out I qualify for poverty-level benefits.

(14,733 posts)My job disappeared short after Obama took office, and I've only just gotten back to some contract work that's netting me less than a third of what I used to make, and leaves me still flirting with breaking over the poverty line.
