"We have to look at ISIS as the leading threat of an international network. It cannot be contained--it must be defeated," she said, in a seeming rhetorical break from President Obama.
Sanders also defended a comment made at the last debate, when he called climate change the greatest threat facing the world. "Climate change is directly related to the rise of terrorism," he said.

(29,798 posts)SANDERS: ... ISIS...
TODD: ... Starting with the biggest threat.
SANDERS: ISIS, you forgot one...
TODD: ... I didn't say that...
SANDERS: ... No, no...
TODD: ... No...
SANDERS: ... ISIS would be ...
TODD: ... We already had that. I'm talking about these three countries. How would you orient our national security, our national defense posture.
SANDERS: Clearly North Korea is a very strange situation because it is such an isolated country run by a handful of dictators, or maybe just one, who seems to be somewhat paranoid. And, who had nuclear weapons.
And, our goal there, in my view, is to work and lean strongly on China to put as much pressure. China is one of the few major countries in the world that has significant support for North Korea, and I think we got to do everything we can to put pressure on China. I worry very much about an isolated, paranoid country with atomic bombs.
I think, clearly, we got to work closely with China to resolve the serious problems we have, and I worry about Putin and his military adventurism in the Crimea and the Ukraine.
TODD: Secretary of Defense Ash Carter this week picked one of those three, and he has said Russia is, basically, the most important national security threat. Sort of reorienting the defense and the challenges to that. Do you agree with his decisions...
SANDERS: ... No, I don't. I worry very, very much about an isolated country. That's what makes me nervous. Russia lives in the world. China lives in the world. North Korea is a very, very strange country because it is so isolated, and I do feel that a nation with nuclear weapons, they have got to be dealt with. Dealt with effectively.

Clinton agreed with Ash Carter. I agree with Sanders.

(4,883 posts)It was an open question - no choices given
You are talking about a "clean up" question at a later event - Hillary given a pass and Sanders was not given the opportunity to voice his position on the "greatest real threat"
kristopher
(29,798 posts)CNN's debate with Webb, Chafee et al touched on it, but that seems far less of a considered answer than the MSNBC debate to me.
If you want to refer to that one, it would probably prevent confusion if you gave better references for the questions.

(29,798 posts)When the debate steered to foreign policy, Sanders said North Korea poses the greatest threat to the U.S.
Clearly North Korea is a very strange situation because it is such an isolated country, he said. North Korea is ran by handful or dictators or maybe just one.

But I do see the ambiguity of the back and forth in the debate. It gives a reasonable basis for what you say.

I live in a beautiful part of the country but it is dying. When I think about moving to other parts of the country, I think about their water supply and if it is viable or clean. I don't think there is a lot of choice out there.

(2,760 posts)I understand it's hard to distill issues down into a poll, but both these terms are far too vague. To me, "environment" encompasses everything from carbon pollution to infrastructure spending. "ISIS" is simply one aspect of a larger, and very complex problem.
Environmental issues affect my day-to-day life far more than ISIS. On the other hand, if a terrorist detonates a nuclear device within our borders or takes down a significant portion of our electrical grid for an extended period of time, a lot of other problems will start to look very small, very quickly.

we got ISIS covered
Not a single waterway in New Jersey where it is safe for a pregnant woman to eat the fish
Environment - not so much
firebrand80
(2,760 posts)Is that it's very useful in dissuading any conventional military from challenging us, but it's capacity to fight small, decentralized terrorist groups is limited. So we can't really point to military spending and assume that we've got terrorism covered.
I'm not saying I necessarily disagree with your position, like I said, it depends on how you look at it. Environmental issues affect people's lives on a more day-to-day basis. Terrorism is one of those things that we don't really thing about until it happens. There are probably many terrorist attacks that are prevented that we can never hear about, but would send chills up your spine if you knew the details.
