Tone-Deaf PAC of the Year...
...goes to the Eastside Leadership Committee for their ads backing Republican Brad Toft over Democrat Mike Mullet in our local legislative district. In an effort to establish Mullet's alleged corruption, the ELC ads equate him to the NFL replacement refs, and feature an image of the well-known controversial call in the Seahawks-Packers game as the keystone of the ad.
Uh, ELC? Do you remember that this race is taking place in the Greater Seattle area, a place where people are not likely to be spurred to heights of outrage by equating your opponent to the refs whose call awarded the hometown team a crucial victory? I mean, this is the one place in the U.S. where you'll find fans with websites featuring stop-action footage of the play, arguing that the refs were completely correct in their decision. And, even for those who thought it was a bad call, do you think they're going to see something negative in equating a candidate, in effect, to someone who gave you an undeserved break?
In a way, I could understand it if the ELC was a national outfit, and they'd just managed to overlook the fact that Seattle was the one place in the country not persuadable by a reference to the call in the Seahawks-Packers game. But they're actually a local firm, based in Kirkland. What were they thinking? Oh, well, is it too much to hope that they wind up taking over all the campaigns for Republicans in the state?
