Romney gave aid to PBS while MA Governor (aka another flip flop)
In 2005, while governor, Romney signed film tax credit bill. This law created a pool for for MA companies that make shows for public television.
The amounts are substantial. In 2011, WGBH (local public television affiliate) received $4.2 million (it makes American Experience Antiques Roadshow Nova) and Watertown MA animation studio Soup2Nuts received about $300,000 (make PBS series WordGirl"
Romney's campaign tries to say that he did this because MA had a surplus and could afford it. Not true!
In 2006, a year after the film tax credit program was passed, the state made $425 million in emergency budget cuts - they cut other programs. According to Michael Widmer, president of the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation and a critic of the film tax credits, these "actions show that we didnt have the resources to do [the film tax credits] without cutting spending elsewhere.
